The human mind attaches many senses and feelings to melodies; they are tied to moments in life. Everyone feels the same emotions even though people are all different and unique. Songs are written about all sorts of feelings such as happiness, sadness, angriness, and sorrow. For example, if a person is having a bad day he can find a song relating to how he is feeling. Within this week’s reading, finishing up with the music stardom unit, we read about the band “New Kids on the Block,” through David Marshalls input on the meaning of the Popular Music Celebrity. He explains how song writers developed the singers through sheet music and lyrics, connecting the performer to the audience. To continue, he explains how the growth of technology thus allowed the mass productions of songs, with portable music devices and radios, everyone was able to listen to their favorite music in their favorite environments. Marshall says, “Moreover, the activity of listening permitted the investment of personal experiences into the meaning of the music to a great degree than did concert performances” (198). Katy Perry is a singer and songwriter of pop-rock music. Katy Perry portrays her love for modern pop-rock music and performance by presenting it in such ways like in Wide Awake. Katy Perry performed a live music performance at the 2012 Billboard Music Awards. The music video kept many of the same features such as the clouds, the shooting star, and the spaceship. Katy Perry’s story in her performance was similar to The Smashing Pumpkin’s music video because in Tonight, Tonight there are two people on an adventure into space and in The Wide Awake performance Katy Perry and a man are together on an adventure as well. However, Katy Perry seems to be in a dream having an adventure. She kept a similar interest about taking an adventure with a significant other and transitioned it in her own art style, which is more of a modern look. There were many of the same set features such as the spaceship, and the shooting star that The Smashing Pumpkins used, and George Melies originally had. The spaceship appears in the beginning of the performance and then the shooting star is towards the middle of the performance and those clearly have a meaning of when the spaceship and the shooting star are placed in the performance. Katy Perry used her performance to represent an adventure with someone, which was echoed from The Smashing Pumpkins. She was able to transcend her art of music into a live performance…

In most songs, the artist or writer often includes figurative language to help add to the message of the song. One famous example of figurative language in a song is the song Umbrella by Rihanna. She uses repetition in the song, making it memorable to all who listen to it. Another example could be the song Love Story by Taylor Swift. The lyrics of this song contain a reference to Romeo and Juliet, creating an allusion which once again, makes this song more memorable. In most stories, movies, and songs, the creator of said work, uses figurative language to help create description that he would be unable to when using just regular language. The stories The Scarlet Ibis by James Hurst, Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, and The Gift of the Magi…

Music can affect a person in many ways, it can change his views, decisions, beliefs and behavior through the lyrics and the message the song’s trying to convey. These groups of people could be discriminated among gender, race or religion. When these kinds of notion continues, these groups of people will remain to be inferior in the society; thus, widening the division between the people.…
