Some see evil and some see power in something destined to destroy our world.

Wild Cards II Aces High is multiple short stories written by multiple authors. It is edited by George R.R. Martin and is 498 pages. My favorite story was Half Past Dead by John J. Miller.

I chose this book because I loved the prequel, Wild Cards, and I enjoy books with multiple authors. I believe that multiple authors give more interesting twists and values in a book.

Setting- It’s now the 1980’s in New York City. An occult has taken over the Cloisters Museum in Upper Manhattan, close to Jokertown. An alien being hangs out in the vacuum of space patiently waiting to take over Earth and gather information about the Wild Card virus.

The Plot An ancient alien being is headed to destroy and consume the Earth while the greed and power of an occult attempts to rule the world.

There are two main conflicts in the book. The first conflict is that the occult wants the Swarm Mother to succeed. The second conflict is Dr. Tachyon knows what the Swarm Mother is capable of and wants her destroyed.

I found the manipulative recruitment tactics by the occult interesting. The occult used a persons attributes to further their cause and deceived people into thinking they had a greater purpose. The expansion of old characters and the introduction of new characters is superb. Such as Jube and Captain Trips, they were only mentioned briefly in the first book. Another interesting part of the book is the first alien invasion. After all of the fighting was over, the Swarm Mother analyzed the situation through the pain of her offspring and came up with an ingenious plan to conquer the world. “Millions of miles from earth… the Swarm Mother contemplated her scattered, surviving budlings….. The assault had been launched more as a probe than a serious attempt at conquest…. Large numbers of the Siberian Swarm had been destroyed at once, broadcasting their telepathic agony to their parent.
