    1. There are high-pressure and low-pressure belts on Earth because of the differences in area that include the location, the mountain ranges, and the coastal areas. It also has to do with the uneven warming of the sun because of the rotation of the earth on its axis. It also has to do with the air that is found around the equator, as it is uneven. This causes for heat to raise which in turn causes low pressure. Then, the air that moves out of these “lows,” toward the poles result in high pressure. High-pressure belts give rise to many of the world’s largest desert. This is because high pressure that is found in the upper atmosphere results in sinking air. Which in turn causes the air to be warm and dry and creates like a blockade that blocks air from below to rise and create clouds which creates rain. The warm air allows for more evaporation to take place, which causes for drier climate. Another factor contributing to this would be that there isn’t any strong winds either or moisture off large bodies of water that would help these desert areas, causing the land to be dry. Most large deserts are found at 30 degrees north and south of the equator.…

The regions had somewhat similar climates, but it was their surroundings that set them apart. Both regions had harsh and unforgiving climates that neither the Chesapeake settlers nor the New England settlers were prepared for. According to a book written by Captain John Smith called the History of Virginia, he states that with the extremity of the bitter cold frostmore than half of us died[Doc. F]. The first settlers of the New England colonies didnt fair too well either. Their first winter of 1620-1621 took a high death toll, leaving only 44 of the original 102 alive. That, however, is where the similarities end. The Chesapeake colonies were fortunate to have extremely fertile soil and soon their society revolved around lucrative cash crops, such as tobacco, rice, sugar, and indigo. Due to the nature of tobacco, colonies such as Virginia and other large producers of tobacco adopted the plantation system. These plantations were many acres in size and required many workers to operate. Thus the seeds of African slavery in America began to form. In addition to the fertile soil the Chesapeake region had many slow moving and navigable rivers. These rivers allowed close to ties to England. The New England colonies were not so lucky and due to prehistoric glaciers, had rocky and infertile soil. With the help of the local Indians, they were able to survive by…

The similarities that the Northeast and Midwest both have in common were that they both were well-developed and had people living in these urban places. In addition to the urban places, the Northeast and Midwest both reach over the 50% mark and had people still sweeping in, and passing over 75 percentile range. The “Northeast area was settled earlier than other parts of the country” and was the first to have the settlement of an urban location, which later in the years has transition to the Midwest, making it the second place to have been “aggressively settled and developed by the people from the Northeast.” In comparison to the South and West, they were the “least urbanized region of the country”, because not many people settled there. Today,…

San Francisco, California has cooler summers but warmer winter as opposed to Saint Louis, Missouri. There are many things that affect this situation such as California being closer to water, Air Temperature/water temperature is cooler, and the water temperature is 27°. First, California is closer to the water. This results in cooler summers and warmer winters because there is a smaller temperature change in water rather than soil when it is exposed to heat. Saint Louis isn’t near any large body of water, which results in the Air/soil temperature being warmer. It also has a greater temperature change when exposed to heat so this means there are hotter summers but colder winters.…

After living in Dallas all of my life, I have come to recognize the range of temperature from month to month, as well as the precipitation that is typically received. The majority of Texas is a warm-temperature climate zone (Physical Features Influencing Vegetation in Texas); however, the Dallas-Fort Worth area can more specifically be described as having a humid subtropical climate, with hot summers (Dallas/Fort Worth Climatology). It can also be characterized as continental because of the wide range of annual temperature, and the scorching summers is caused by the westerlies and the low humidity (Dallas/Fort Worth Climatology). Observing the Dallas climograph, it can be inferred that the average precipitation and temperature have a direct relationship. Based on the annual temperature data, it can also be concieved that the summer highs reach way into the high 90’s, with cooler nights around the mid 70’s (NWS). Rainfall typically occurs during nighttime in…
