Will Reality TV Ruin Society?
Everyone watches reality TV shows for the basic purpose of entertainment, right? There has been a controversial debate about whether or not entertainment, such as reality shows, will “ruin” society. Neal Gabler wrote a book titled Life the Movie: How Entertainment Conquered Reality stating that yes, society will indeed ruin society and I agree with this statement. Most of the reality TV programs on the air promote bad behavior and untrue stereotypes. Skins is a reality show based mainly off of stereotypes. 16 & Pregnant falsely projects the idea of what teen motherhood is really like. Jersey Shore completely promotes ghastly behavior, appalling habits, and an inappropriate image of what America is like. On the other hand, some reality shows promote a good message to society. Shows like American Idol, America’s Got Talent, and X Factor are prime examples of a good quality reality TV show that is strictly fun and full of entertainment. These programs allow kids and adults alike the opportunity to reach their dreams if their dreams happen to be worldwide super-stardom. And who doesn’t dream of being famous every once and awhile? Shows like the ones mentioned above enable people to chase that dream. But, most shows aren’t that great. The majority of the total percent of the reality shows on the air promote some type of bad message. When Skins the British-born show, was translated to American audiences, the controversy was raging before an episode emerged. American teenagers were being stereotyped as people who cuss all the time and the only things they care about are partying, relationships, and heartbreak. This makes America’s future generation look like it will be filled with illiterate people who have unstable love lives. And another thing, this TV show, depicts teenagers in the United States as sex-crazed and drug-addicted. People visiting from other countries expect to find underage drug dealers and underage prostitutes at every street corner in America when they come here for vacation. That is not the image most teens want to be seen as. But thanks to TV programs, like Skins, we are viewed that way.

Another example of a reality show that wrongly represents America’s youth is 16 & Pregnant. This program is basically about teenage girls getting knocked up by their boyfriends and is then being paid to be filmed and have their story be put on television. This puts the idea of having sex, getting pregnant and making money in every teenage girl’s mind who watches this series. Foreigners watching 16 & Pregnant get the impression that the female teenagers in America all want to be baby mommas before the age of 20. Thus, giving America an even worse reputation. This series also makes out being pregnant at sixteen years old is the thing to be if you want to be popular. So now, there is the peer pressure factor for girls aged 14-19 to have sex to be considered “cool”. Most girls will do anything to be popular even if it consists of them giving up their childhood to raise a child. Shows like, 16 & Pregnant and Teen Mom, need to be terminated before every teenage girl is walking around, expecting a baby. The show that is the best at advertising bad behavior and habits is the MTV’s booze-and-dramathon Jersey Shore. The television show is most often used as evidence that America is about to incinerate into a blazing Babylon. It has been criticized for irresponsible alcoholism and unjustifiable sluttiness. Snooki, one of the main people of the show, parades around in clothing that barely covers her chest and backside, she starts to drink alcoholic beverages from the moment she wakes up to the moment she gets into bed at night. This woman makes it seem like its okay to act in this manner because she’s on TV and people believe that everything you see on television is the norm and if you don’t act that way, you’re a freak. Jersey Shore is also blamed for the dumbing-down of culture and society. The people in this series support the idea that you just need to be attractive to make a living. So, the viewers start to think this way also and they begin to let their education slip and focus on their external appearance instead of their internal intelligence. This program needs to be cancelled immediately for the sake of America’s future generations.
In conclusion, entertainment, but mainly reality TV, will ruin our society. We have shows about stereotypical American teenagers, pregnant teenagers, and a show that makes America appear to be a bunch of uneducated human beings who only care about appearances and material objects. Skins, 16 & Pregnant, and Jersey Shore are just a few of the reality TV series that give America a horrific reputation and give teenagers watching the show, a terrible idea of what they should act like. This statement needs to be repeated: These shows and other shows like them NEED to be cancelled for the sake of our country’s reputation and so that teenagers won’t be pressured to act a certain way to be referred to as “cool” or “popular”.

Is Reality TV good for us? This may be a question a person might ask themselves if they were one of the millions people who checked in with Joe Millionaire in the fall of 2003 on Fox. "Why Reality TV Is Good For Us", this article was written by James Poniewozik in TIME magazine in 2003. Poniewozik goes to talk about how reality TV is good for all of us, "that viewers can empathize with Tony Soprano without wanting to be him" (Poniewozik 471). Wrong, most people look at TV and dream someday of becoming these fictional characters that we perceive as good and bad. TV viewers are being lead astray, "When a Reality TV show depicts bad behavior, it's immoral, misanthropic, sexiest, or sick" by attracting viewers to a point were their interested in how far TV will go.…

It seems that almost every TV channels has their own reality TV show. It’s crazy what they do on those shows, most of the episodes on Jersey Shore the cast drinks so much that they black out or Chef Ramsey cusses out one of the contestant’s family because they didn’t cook the fish properly. The negative aspects exceed the positive one vastly. According to Google the definition of a reality TV show is “a genre of television programming that presents purportedly unscripted dramatic or humorous situations” (Google). The truth is that most of these shows are rehearsed and scripted which makes it even worse because we should know that its not actually reality TV it’s more like unreality TV These shows are well known for harmfully influencing our behaviour, our minds and give us a shallow prospective on life. It’s outrageous how unreal these shows are, how they lower society’s values and how it has such a huge impact on us. Shows that portray any kind of extreme negative behaviour should not be allowed on TV. Instead people should watch educational shows or game shows.…

Reality television has been around far longer than many give it credit. Many viewers forget about the very first reality television shows such as Big Brother, Survivor, and non-trashy versions of The Bachelor that displayed things such as alliance, friendship, and character development through the praises of its audience. Although newer shows have been accused of growing "trashier"; I feel that this change is actually only in response to the demand of its audience. Show popularity drops when the message they portray becomes "unhip", or "uncool". So in order to keep up ratings shows were forced to show what people wanted to see. As our country has slowly let go of morals and standards, its people have been forced to adapt. Reality television has been forced to diminish all possibilities for ever being labeled as "moral". It has taken a direction for the worse and shows today lack little meaning or value.…

When you think about the content and fibre of reality television there's really not much there. Many people feel that reality television is the best production to come from ABC, NBC and all the corporate conglomerates trying to make easy money. That's exactly what they are doing. Selling easily produced television to easily minded recipients. The first problem with reality TV is that it isn't even reality. As soon as a camera is placed in front of someone, they automatically think that they are actors. A true, original example of reality TV is Candid Camera, showing peoples real reactions to an unexpected situation. The primary basis for many of these new shows (but not all) seems to be to put people in painful, embarrassing, and humiliating situations for the rest of us to watch - and, presumably, laugh at and be entertained by. I believe the problem with all of these reality TV shows is the joke factor. All of these shows are a joke, it's like watching a daytime soap opera; only unfortunately visible at a prime time hour. It is really quite painful to witness the same poor saps going at it over the same girl or guy. The continuing popularity of these shows is a clear representation of the intelligence of North Americans. I say we rid of all reality TV and replace them with shows covering the lives of animals, which sadly would be more interesting.…

Journalist Morley Safer once said “Reality tv is sleazy. It is manipulative. It is as momentary as any thing in popular culture.” Many reality tv shows shown today emphasize violence which could result in dangerous actions from others. Also, many reality shows are easily accessible for children, and they can influence vulnerable children. Finally, many people have a difficult time separating reality from reality TV. For these reasons, I believe that reality tv does promote dangerous stereotypes.…

The definition of reality is “the world or the state of things as they actually exist, as opposed to an idealistic or notional idea of them.” So as a society should we label reality T.V as such? When there are cameras watching your every move, and you are aware that the cameras are there, how real is it? Many reality series stars cast are aspiring actors, or already acting. So how are the viewers able to determine if the situations is reality? or are they acting for the cameras? This leads me to my next question, is reality T.V having a negative impact on our current culture? “The average American watches four point five hours of television a day” and reality television makes up majority of today programming on television. In the year 1992 a new idea was introduced to America and it was called reality television. MTV produced a show called, The Real World that had seven strangers living in a house together and had everything they did filmed. After many failed attempts at trying to make this reality trend catch on, CBS launched Survivor, which pioneered the way for all reality shows to follow in the next decade. It was a show about people battling it out in two separate tribes to their wits end in the jungle and it spread like wildfire across America. Survivor premiere debuted to 28 million viewers and is still on today, a decade and 21 seasons later (McCraley). Reality…

Unfortunately, today’s popular culture highly regards reality shows that are far from being real. Richard Huff’s title “Real or Not, It Doesn’t Matter” clearly states this fact; the public enjoys watching these shows, even though it knows that they are deceitful. Reality shows are fallacies, the work of the producers and editors, who work hard to make people believe that they are watching truthful situations. The impact of reality television on Americans is negative, due to the false situations it portrays, provoked situations, and because of its attempt to deceive the audience.…
