William Allen White was born in Emporia, Kansas, on February 10th, 1868 (www.kshs.org). He was the son of Mary Ann Hatten White and Dr. Allen White, a well-known politician and editor. In July, 1921, White began publishing attacks on the KKK when a group met at a convention at the Broadview hotel. He was known nationally to be interested in the Gubernatorial election in 1924. White disagreed with the delegates, like Ben Paulsen, and failed to persuade a third delegate to enter the election. Eventually, rumors spread that William Allen White was interested in entering himself. Finally in 1924, the rumors were true. White entered with such topics like the Ku Klux Klan. White’s entry required a nomination petition. To get the most votes, White sent the petition to neighboring towns. The results were astounding, White had a petition that ten thousand people signed. Other life inspirations included the hiring of White to work on Alf Landon’s presidential campaign in 1836 (www.findagrave.com). The campaign and Alf Landon lost the presidential election. William Allen White also had the honor of befriending Theodore Roosevelt, former president of The United States.
