William H. Armstrong Character Analysis
Thornton wilder and William H . Armstrong made the story to allow the reader's to make a connection to the character in a very special way. The work of art both these authors created, made the reader connect to the characters in the story. The author made the reader experience emotions like sadness, happiness, joy. Three characters, however from both books share common traits with each other. Those characters are The boy from Sounder, George Gibbs from Our Town, and Mrs.Webb and Ed. Webb. Each of these characters experienced something similar and that is a loss. They all lost someone at some point or time during the story.
The boy from sounder loses two of his family members. The dog Sounder and the Dad. The Dad dies from his wounds he got
from a mining accident and the dog has no will to live because of the death of his owner. The boy, however still has faith after what happened and pursues his education. This allows him to become a teacher and tell his story. Throughout the story the boy remembers to always stay strong and never give up. Also the boy never gave up on wanting to learn to read and so because of that he learned and excelled. If the boy gave up on his ambitions after the death of his father and dog, then he would have not been so successful in the future. “When life is so tiresome, there ain't no peace like the greatest peace—the peace of the Lord's hand holding you.” This quote came from the boy's mother right after his father passed. This quote is very inspiring. It gives a demonstration to the reader how you can always make a positive with two negatives. Editor Webb and Mrs. Webb lost a lot throughout the play of Our Town. They lost their daughter Emily when she was in her 20s due to childbirth complications. The Gibbs also lost their son Wally when his appendix burst while on a boy scout camping trip. The Webbs has experienced a lot in life. They understand what it is like to lose a loved one. The thing is thought the Webbs remember one thing “Life goes on”. The Webbs understands that there will always be bad things along the way and in order to get through the rough times is to remember that life always goes on. Over time the Webbs will soon learn to accept the fact that their daughter Emily has passed and continue living their life. George from the play Our Town has lost his wife Emily and his mother Mrs.Gibbs. Emily was the daughter of ED. Webbs and Mrs.Webbs. Emily was a friend of George for many years ,they grew up together and got married together. When Emily died, she left behind George and her son. George now has to take care and raise a family on his own. George has probably experienced a lot of pain due to the death of Emily and the death of his mother Mrs.Gibbs. But because of these deaths now he can experience what it is like to lose someone you love and he can also learn that life goes on. Life will always go on, it's not the end of the world. Death happens to people all the time around the world. It is part of the cycle of life. That is why everybody should make the most with the people they love. Nobody knows when they're going to die. That is why people need to learn to lose and remember that “life always goes on”.
