Willie Hugh Nelson was born in Abbott Texas in Hill County April 29, 1933. He is part English, Iris and Cherokee according to his ancestry. Willie was named by his cousin Mildred, who also chose Hugh as his middle name, in honor of her recently deceased younger brother. His mother (Marie and father (Ira Nelson) were what you called free spirits who never stayed in one place very long at one time. His mother left after he was born and his dad remarried moved away, left Willie and his sister Bobbie to be raised by his grandparents.
In the April 2007 issue of Stuff Magazine Nelson was interviewed about his long locks. “I started braiding my hair when it started getting too long, and that was, I don't know, probably in the 70's." In October 2014, the braids of Nelson were sold for US$37,000 at an auction of the Waylon Jennings State.
