A scenario has been created to simulate a typical problem in a wind turbine manufacturing firm. Complaints from several customers have been received on the same model of a wind turbine which this firm produces, which have been experiencing a loss in efficiency a few months after installation. This loss in quality can have several hidden negative consequences if not tackled appropriately. A fast and efficient solution has to be found to fix this problem in order to restore the company’s reputation of producing high quality products, as failing to do so may impinge directly on the company’s future prospects for sales.
The 7 new quality tools can be used to implement a structured and disciplined approach to solving this quality problem.
The first tool is the affinity Diagram. This is a creative brainstorming tool where members assigned to solve the quality issue come up with a list of ideas, issues and opinions which are organized into groups according to the relationship within the items. Such a tool is intended for complex problems and not recommended for simple and straightforward quality issues.
This tool was of great help to the team as some very interesting debates arose which helped finding a plausible cause to the problem.
The second tool; the Interrelationship diagram serves the purpose to take a central problem or issue and create links to the problem in a sequential manner. Such a tool
