The main difference that one can find between the American and the Italian wine label systems are that American wines are named according to the type or types or grapes that they used while Italian, as most of European wines, are named according to the region that they come from.
Another important difference is that Italian wineries are required to show on their label the vintage year (year when the grapes were harvested) while American wines are not required to do it.
Italian Laws only permit the mention of the variety of grape used when at least 85% of the kind was used in the production.
American wines must show the type of wine. For example: White- Table Wine.

Piedmont:
This area borders with the alps which delimits Italy’s border with France and Switzerland. The area of Asti the principal wine producer of wine of this region. Piedmont wine region has 45 DOC’s and 12 DOCG’s. The 12 DOCG wines in Piedmont are: Asti, Barbaresco, Barbera d’Asti , Barbera del Monferrato Superiore, Barolo, Acqui, Dogliani, Ovada, Gattinara, Gavi, Ghemme, and Roero. The region vineyards cover 57,487 hectares or 142,050 acres; yearly wine production is 3,405,000 hectoliters or 89,960,369 gallons; 30% white, 70% red; 55.8% is DOC.
