Winter Paradise

The smell of maple bacon tickled my nose only seconds before my cell phone rang loudly, awaking me from my sluggish state. I silenced the device and tossed it to the other side of the bed. I could feel the sunlight on my skin creeping through the cracks of the blinds. Opening my eyes to a room so brightly lit, I grunted as the light hit my dilated pupils. I crawled from underneath the thick comforter only to be hit by icy cold air, making my skin form little chill bumps. I grabbed my house coat and wrapped my body with it tightly. Satisfied and warm, I walked towards the huge framed windows and opened the wooded blinds. Glancing out at the snow covered mountain tops that seem to outline the winter forest, was a breath taking sight. The trees seemed to dance in the wind and snowflakes landed so lightly against the tree tops. From the beautiful views to the enticing sounds of nature, all the ingredients to a perfect vacation lie right in the valley of the Gatlinburg, Tennessee Smoky Mountains. Sitting in the passenger seat of my boyfriend’s 2004 Buick, I watched the trees fly by swiftly on the other side of the glass window. I thumped my fingertips against the sturdy arm rest to ease some of my anticipation. I could feel us nearing our destination but it wasn’t coming fast enough. The narrow road we traveled on meandered around the rocky mountain and seemed to become thinner the further we traveled. I grabbed the map from the dusty dashboard and began to scan it with my eyes. I traced the slim line with my fingertip until my index finger rested atop of our destination. We were only about one mile from the cabin. Now my anticipation was stronger than ever. There is something so appeasing about vacationing in Gatlinburg, Tennessee during the winter season with the person you care about the most. Staying a modern-style cabin that overlooks the exquisite mountains seem to serve as the perfect getaway. There are many components take makes the

In winterkill the story starts of depressing and explaining how the narrarator and Harley Reeves have both been laid off from their jobs. Then he goes to the bar and notices a girl who is there and his friend Troy just has to pick up on her and uses a corny pickup line. Troy is in a wheel chair due to a smoke jumper’s injury. The lady at the bar was named Nola. As the conversation carried on and got a little more personal troy invited Nola to go fishing with him and his friend. Nola agreed to go fishing and then get dinner. They made their way out to the river and Les and Nola began to talk about how cold it was and that led to Nola telling him to warm her up. Just before they were going to warm each other up they heard a weird noise and it was Troy struggling while fishing for some reason. It turns out that troy has snagged a big fish and the tension slowly pulled him out of the chair and he was slowly being dragged on his chest down by the water. Troy was saying that he caught the big one and he needed help. Troy pleaded with Les to help him catch the fish because he did not want to let it go. So Troy and Les struggled and pulled on the line as hard as they could for what seemed like minutes and they could not get it to budge. Les kept going farther out in the water until he got to where the line was snagged and he realized that it wasn’t even a fish and Troy had gotten his line caught on a dead deer. This did not make Troy happy at all because he always thought fishing was his thing and he just got tricked by a dead animal that shouldn’t have even been in the water. They all ended up going inside and having the chicken with wine and talked on throughout the night. Snagging the deer was a confidence killer for Troy. After that he watched Harley Reeves and his mother dance to end the night, he enjoyed seeing her happy.…

In this book Bill Bryson is planning on hiking the entire 2,220 miles of the Appalachian Trial. He wanted to reacquaint himself with nature and his inner sense of self. In the beginning of the book he thought he would have to take this journey alone but he was joined by an old friend who he hadn’t talked to in a while. As he and Stephen Katz; his friend that had joined him started hiking the Appalachian Trial they were off pace and slow and they both hiked at different paces so they rarely hiked together. When I think about how slow and difficult the beginning was for them, it reminds me of how you will be as you begin your new journey, it will be completely new to you. There will be hardships there will be competition there will be new experiences that you will have to learn to deal with. There will be no one by your side telling you what turn to make next. They had a road map to tell them where to go and which way to turn but you do not, you have to make your own decisions and choose the path that you want to take without knowing the outcome or knowing where it leads.…

Cruising on back roads there’s nothing in sight. No gas stations or any houses for that matter. My feet ached as I passed through the automatic screen door to the snow filled Gunnison-Crested Butte Regional Airport parking lot. The cool, crisp air stung my face, but my smile remained. Seven slow years have passed since I visited Crested Butte, Colorado, and I have been craving to return the moment I left. The towering mountains, blissful blue sky, and blinding white snow from the piercing sun makes Colorado a place like no other. I stood waiting on the icy concrete for my dad to pull around Baby Blue, a 1996 Chevrolet Astro van my family had nicknamed. My family visited Colorado in 2010, because my mom’s boss owns a timeshare condo, which included Baby Blue. He offered us a vacation to Crested Butte where we could have a free place to…

My white knuckles clutched the wheel as my little car whined and jerked into high gear, finally accelerating onto Six Forks. Barely a mile from home, and driving was already intimidating. My credentials were impeccable. I had passed a dreadful thirty hour class with a teacher whose voice carried to the moon and proven my driving prowess to a cartoonish instructor sporting a beret, plaid shirt, corduroy jacket, billowy pants, and a pair of suspenders. A pair of rimless spectacles made his eyes appear small and beady while accentuating his pudgy face. There was no conceivable reason to be nervous, but I could not shake the grim sense of foreboding that hovered over me.…

Judy Jones was born wealthy and she was attracted to men with power and money. Aside from her physical beauty, her status gave her many social options. She was vain and liked to be seen with a procession of men. Dexter was one of them. The seductive mannerisms in her voice had a magical effect on men and it drew their attention. Her voice was not lady-like but her tone was deep. Later on Dexter remembered that unique voice. Fitzgerald wrote in the short story, “He imagined her husky voice over the telephone…”. “The smile which turns down the corner of her mouth in a half pout” also made men wild. Judy had complete control over the men with whom she associated, and it made her feel not only powerful, but alive. She controlled them like puppets on a string, including Dexter. When men lost interest, she knew how to win back their affection for her. Her seductive voice and mannerisms contributed to her emotional power over these men. Her selfish tenacity emerged as she went after whatever she wanted of their affections.…

Camping and being in the outdoors has been a significant part of my life for the last eight years. As a child, I never enjoyed it much. Three years ago, my family along with four other families decided to take a trip to Glacier National Park. The sky-piercing mountains and the beautiful lakes urged me to explore the outdoors more. From hiking through the mountainous trails to driving up the mountains through the Going-to-the-Sun road, I finally began to realize the relief and soothing sense that nature had to offer. Despite the love I finally found in the outdoors, I was never the dedicated and…

The sun shone vibrantly through the trees and I loved the way it complemented the gold leaves. I started to notice the incline to the top of the hill, it was steady unlike the Adirondacks where you go up and down. When I got to the top I saw a spectacular view of the surrounding neighborhoods and way in the distance I saw the buildings of Rochester. As I stood there I admired the pure beauty that lies so close to home. It is hard to believe that a wilderness like this one could be surrounded by suburban neighborhoods. Being higher up and in an open space I could really appreciate the mixture of golds, oranges and yellows it was different than being on regular ground level. I thought to myself ‘’I should do this more often, it’s peaceful and healthy.’’ I felt a certain peace with in me while I’m in the woods, suddenly my phone vibration broke my train of thought. It was my stepmom texting me to see if everything was okay, I replied yes and I’d be back at the trailhead in a short time. The leaves snapped and cracked under my feet on the way back and the crisp fall air made the not yet fallen leaves dance in the trees, it was getting later in the day. I was three quarters through the loop so I was still fine,I wasn’t…

C old Mountain , Charles Frazier’s debut novel, won critical acclaim and the National Book Award for fiction when it was published in 1997. As an author of travel books and short stories, Frazier had ample experience in writing about landscapes and using a condensed prose style. Frazier applied these literary skills in crafting Cold Mountain’s episodic structure and detailed descriptive passages. Frazier’s prose draws on the transcendentalism of Ralph Waldo Emerson, the scope of southern novels by authors such as William Faulkner, and the appreciation of nature expressed in the poetry of Walt Whitman. Frazier lives in North Carolina, and his choice of Cold Mountain’s setting along the Blue Ridge Mountains conveys his profound identification with this hallowed terrain.…

I was so tired, even attempting to keep my eyes open was a struggle. My whole body was achy after a hard day’s of school work, constantly staring at a computer screen and typing away, just to finish an essay. My pale white hands, frozen by the air conditioning blasting on high, were holding on to the steering wheel like a person gripping the edge of a cliff, hoping not to fall into a dark abyss. My brain wanted to give in, to remain in the sleep that I kept dangerously drifting in and out of. I took a look outside, the road looking meek. The rows if brush hoars any objects spattered off the road by vehicles in the August sun. It felt like I was going around in a circle, my tires skating around the bends and turns of the road. I felt maybe I should slow down so I do not lose…

Some people enjoy the beach, others enjoy the mountains, but my favorite place is Branson, Missouri. Imagine peering down from the dock into a body of water in which you can see every little detail as it descends toward the bottom. You look up and see the cascading Ozark Mountains as if they were part of the border of Mona Lisa’s frame. A hush and peace unlike any other overwhelms you. You can hear the calming sounds of nature as an underlying harmony to that peace. The birds croon soft tones as the water flows softly past the dock. As the morning begins, a cool breeze floats off of Table Rock Lake giving the sensation of Fall no matter what time of the year it may be. Your stomach begins to growl as the smell of fresh baked…
