Winterizing Your Deck Essay
As the summer days come to an end, it is time to turn your mind to the chore of packing away your outdoor living area in preparation of winter. While you have indoor storage ready and waiting for your outdoor furniture, when was the last time you did a check of your deck at the end of summer? Winterising your deck now is going to make sure the deck condition does not deteriorate over winter. But what aspects of your deck to you need to check exactly? Use this checklist to get your deck into tip top condition before the temperatures plummet.

Damaged Boards

If you do nothing else during your deck check, have a close look at each of the timber boards that make up the base and railings of your deck. In particular, you are looking for boards that are broken or have chips missing out of them. These boards need to be replaced before winter begins

If you are not too handy with a hammer, you can arrange for a deck builder to replace the damaged planks for you.

Dirt Removal

While leaving dirt on your deck may not seem too big of a big deal, a dirty deck can cause deterioration to the wood beneath, as well as encourage mildew growth. Mildew on a deck is dangerous because when it is wet it becomes slippery, and this makes walking on the deck hazardous to you and your family members.

Decks can be cleaned two ways. First, sweep away any loose dirt using a stiff-bristled broom. Brushing the deck first will reveal any damaged boards that need to be fixed. Secondly, you need to wash the deck with hot, soapy water. You can do this by manually scrubbing it using a scrubbing brush, or you can use a pressure washer to hose the deck boards clean. If you choose to pressure wash the deck, make sure you keep the tip of the pressure hose at least 30 cm away from the deck boards. If you get the hose any closer to the deck than this, the force of the water could splinter the deck boards.

The development of events outside a person’s control, regarded as determined by a supernatural power; fate. An indifferent power that predetermines the inevitable events and outcome of our lives; fate. A simple four letter word that controls so much more than we, human beings, truly come to realize in our lifetimes; fate. In the novel Snow Falling on Cedars, most of the citizens of San Piedro Island also fail to conclude that this powerful force is either working against them, or determining the outcome of their future. Given the fact that Guterson relates the entire novel to how a Japanese-American man, Kabuo Miyamoto, is accused of murdering a white fisherman by the name of Carl Heine, there are many instances in which fate is the reason behind the outcome of events. The whole reason that Carl actually died was because of chance; his death was a mere accident, not a murder. Similarly, the disastrous snowstorm that hits the island of San Piedro during the trial of Kabuo is also a prime example of fate because it controls how the trial goes on for the many characters involved. Likewise, Kabuo’s fate is decided for him, the final verdict being either life or death. In the end, whether the citizens of San Piedro realized it or not, fate was the main force that decided how the events and lives of those living on the island would turn out.…

It was a cold snowy morning on the frozen shores of Lake Superior. I unloaded all of my ice fishing supplies from my truck and back my ATV out of the trailer. The ice was at least a foot thick by this time of year according to the people in town more than safe enough for the trip out on the lake. I gassed up my ATV and strapped down all my gear and headed out to my shanty. Trying to navigate in these conditions is very treacherous having only a general idea on the whereabouts of my shanty is would be difficult. Finally, the weather cleared for a few minutes allowing me to spot my shanty that was luckily still standing. I unlocked the door and fired up my ice drill which drilled through the ice like a hot knife through butter.I turned on my heater and waited for it to warm up which felt like an eternity in the frigid winter temperatures that hovered around zero and the biting wind outside made it almost unbearable. I waited for my father and his brothers to arrive with the…
