Wireless Charging of Mobile Phone Using Microwaves

Chapter 1
The Problem and Its Background
It is hard to believe that fifteen years ago, mobile phones were rarity. Most of the early phones were called “car phones” because of its size. It was too large and hard to carry around in a pocket or purse.

Early phones were just for talking. Gradually, features like voicemail were added, but the main purpose was to talk. Eventually, phone manufacturers began to realize that they could integrate other technologies into their phone and expand to its features. The earliest smart phones let users access email, and use the phone as a fax machine, pager, and address book. (insite.artinstitute.edu)

These electromagnetic waves are made up of two parts. The first part is an electric field. The second part is a magnetic field. So that is why they are called electromagnetic waves. The two fields are at right angles to each other. (www.scribd.com)

Nowadays, mobile phones have been part of people’s life. Some are having a hard time without using it. They communicate using these phones. But most of the time, as the user uses the mobile phone, the battery lessen its charge. And when the time comes that the phone has to be used, importantly, the battery needs to be charged first before taking it anywhere.

This is done by use of microwaves. The microwave signal is transmitted from the transmitter along with the message signal using special kind of antennas called slotted wave guide antenna at a frequency is 2.45 GHz. There are minimal additions, which have to be made in the mobile handsets, which are the addition of a sensor, a Rectenna, and a filter. With the above setup, the need for separate chargers for mobile phones is eliminated and makes charging universal. Thus the more you talk, the more is your mobile phone charged! With this proposal the manufacturers would be able to remove the talk time and battery stand by from their phone specifications! (www.studymode.com)

Since the early 2000’s, wireless coverage has expanded ten-fold across the country. Cell phones wireless capacity is both a good thing and a bad thing. Wireless gives you the ability to travel and maintain a connection. This connection however depends on your surrounding environment. There are many things that affect radio waves and if something is disrupting the signal from your cell phone to the radio tower, a connection will be hard to get. Staying within large metropolitan areas guarantees a good signal due to the overlapping of radio towers. The battery on a cellphone can be considered both a pro and a con as well. Batteries are a form of contained electricity which allows you to provide an electrical charge to the components within your cell phone. The product that most deserves to be introduced into the market is the self charging battery. There have been several variations or attempts on producing such a device, but none have quite made the jump into common everyday purchases made by consumers. The setbacks have been price, desire and practicality. Many people will not pay $20.00 for a battery to stick into a five dollar product. Rechargeable batteries have had a little more success, although those too get lost, cost more and cost money to recharge. Manufacturers do not want to go out of business so development of this type of product has not found adequate funding. Many too are not practical. Like the solar powered self charging battery being used in some cell phones. Nice idea, but impractical as one may be in a call and lose their charge for their phone. Now instead of putting in another battery or plugging into the nearest wall socket (which either may not be available), you simply need to take it out and let it charge under the sun…for 30 minutes to make your next call. There are several features that this outline will demonstrate the superior performance, durability and quality of these batteries in a very competitive market. The self charging battery we will offer requires no electrical outlet for recharging, it sounds an alarm when low to start the recharging cycle and it is designed to replace all standard battery types at an economical cost.…
