What are the differences between 802.11b, 802.11a, 802.11g, and 802.11n wireless LANs? The Difference between 802.11b,a,g,n wireless LANs is that what frequency band they use and the maximum data rate. Take 802.11a technology it uses the 5 GHz band and can get great speeds up to 54mbps. The problem is that the range on the 802.11a network doesn’t go too far so they developed the 802.11b technology which is 2.4GHz and has max data rates of 11mbps. That’s a huge drop off from 802.11a’s 54mbps but the benefit of this network was the range was a lot better. Next came out was the 802.11g technology which is 2.4GHz and 54mbps this combines the technology of the 802.11b/a networks because it has the range and speed but with the fueling internet speeds and data speeds needed 802.11n technology was created, which has a 2.4GHz or 5GHz network which you can choose which frequency band you want to use or you can use both of them. Another benefit is that it has a max data rate of 450 mbps.

Do you think standards are beneficial in wireless networking or do you think they limit new technologies? Explain your answer. Currently I think the standards are beneficial in wireless networking because if there were no standards you could make a very powerful wireless network and companies would try and pump out a wireless signal that would interfere with everything that has a signal that is wireless so by having standards it makes people make sure that they don’t have to strong of a signal and the FCC makes sure it doesn’t interfere with any government frequency’s. For example say if they had no standards then someone could build I big enough antenna and shoot it at a country causing interference with communication, satellites it would be a new type of warfare which I think no one wants. It does limit new technologies a little bit because they probably have technology out there that would extend a network and pass more speeds then ever but they have standards for a reason. To make
