The book going over in this essay is called Witches! by Rosalyn Schanzer, and is a book about the events that have taken place in the town of Salem. This is a very weird and mysterious subject because so many people died in a very strange and concerning manner. First of which is “attention” this could be a factor in this crisis because some people could have accused people just to get attention from the people around them and be in the center of activity. Second is people just doing it for fun or “sport” if they're bored they could enjoy people being killed or harassed in jail. The last and most probably biggest one, is revenge, people could have hated another and wanted them dead and realizing this was a very efficient and good way to do it or at least get them arrested. The accusations in the Salem Witch Trials were motivated by attention, sport, and revenge.…
Have you ever had to make a choice to move far away from your home? In the book The Witch of Blackbird Pond, Kit had to make this very decision.…
This building is known as the Fishbourne Roman Palace, located in the village of Fishbourne, Chichester in West Sussex and was built around first century AD. Scholars believe the British client king Tiberius Claudius Cogidubnus was most likely the owner of the palace and gardens. Cogidubnus was a ‘Roman groomed’ Briton who was in control of party of southern Britain around this time. This image displays a plan for the palace mapped out through excavation done by Barry Cunliffe in 1960s. It gives an accurate look at how the palace was laid out, showing the entrances, rooms and gardens. The palace was massive, covering in total 2.3 hectares and contained over 100 rooms. The palace is stone-walled and contains 4 areas surrounding a central area…
Witches, during the Elizabethan Era were a dangerous, evil menace to society that made pacts with the devil and had supernatural powers that were used to commit unspeakable crimes against humanity. Witches were held responsible for sudden deaths, illnesses or accidents. The public hated the witches for these calamities that the witches had no knowledge of or control over. Many times they were burned at the stake or drowned. Witches were greatly misunderstood during the Elizabethan Era due to a superstitious perception of their religion, lifestyle, and intricate knowledge of nature and natural medicine.…
By, Elizabeth George Speare. The book took place in the year of 1687. Some of the book takes place on a boat called the "Dolphin," and then the rest of the book in Wethersfield, in the state of Connecticut. The main characters in the book are Katherine Tyler (her nickname was Kit), Nat Eaton, Uncle Matthew, Aunt Rachel, Hannah Tupper, Kit's cousins Mercy, and Judith, Prudence, Hannah Tupper, John Holbrook, Goodwife Cruff and Goodman Cruff. One of the problems in the beginning of the book is when she goes to her cousin's house and was adapting to their way of life; for instance when she got there, they all did not have good clothes and she had really fancy clothes that they would have never worn in their life because they were too expensive. Another problem that she encountered was that she met a lady named Hannah Tupper that lived near Blackbird Pond and she was a Quaker. That's why she was forced to live there, because no one liked her and she was also accused of being a witch. Kit made friends with her when she bumped into her in the meadow. This jeopardized her life and that was a problem. She helped Prudence read and write and that was a little risky too.…
Compassion is important in every walk of life. The definition of compassion is : a virtue of empathy for the suffering of others and a desire to alleviate that suffering. Compassion is important because it makes up who you are and is a strong part of human love. Without compassion, no human could ever get close to each other or function together as a society. Without compassion, people would not be able work together because they would not care about anyone else's pain. There would be no working together towards a common goal, that is one of the key pillars of society. Compassion is reason we have doctors and nurses. Compassion is reason that when we see someone hurt, on the ground, we help them up. In the novel, THE WITCH OF BLACKBIRD POND, Kit and Nat show compassion for Hannah Tupper when her house burns down. She is their friend and they are sympathetic for her and do anything to help her. They even go into the building to retrieve her cats. They are feeling compassion for her and will help to alleviate her suffering, risking the possible legal repercussions of aiding a witch. Another instance in the novel in which the characters show compassion is when Kit teaches Prudence to read and when she defends Prudence from her mother by lying at the trial. The first time was compassion because kit saw prudence had low self worth because her mother has lead her to believe that she is stupid and never will be able to read. Kit sees her suffering and decides to alleviate her suffering, risking Goodwife Cruff's wrath by teaching her to read and write. Later in the book, once kit is accused of practicing witch craft and the townspeople present the evidence of the hornbook with Prudence's name written in it repeatedly, Kit lies for Prudence's sake. She doesn't want Prudence to get beaten by her mother. She risks possible death in compassion for Prudence's situation. Finally, prudence shows compassion to Kit. Against all odds, though she has been educated to not show…
Author Gary Krist attitude and/or tone towards Mayor Thompson is portrayed quite frequently throughout the book City Of Scoundrels. Showing his response to how the Mayor handles each situation in each disaster or political event going on. From handling the race riots Krist portrays how involved Mayor Thompson tries to be with the situation alone. Lone his vast support base from the African Americans and his support he gives them, he stays distant when decisions have to be made. Though uses his respect for the African American community to find his way to ‘victor’. Thompson uses his ‘somewhat’ wise tactics to keep his public figure on the good side. Krist voices his opinion on how remote the Mayor keeps upon the choices he has to make, while…
In Witches! The Absolutely True Tale of Disaster in Salem, author Rosalyn Schanzer discusses the outbreak of the Salem witch trials and tells about the murderous colonial period of 1692. The trials took place in Salem, Massachusetts when the Puritans of England migrated to New England. The accusations of witches started when two girls began having fits, and a doctor tried to use elixirs and everything he could to cure them. He then diagnosed the two girls of being plagued by witches. After these events, the first 3 accused witches were arrested on February 29,1692, and the Salem witch trials began. When the accused were tried at the courthouse, they were already walking into death’s gate. Exodus 22:18 says, “ Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.” This scripture set the tone for the Salem witch trials..The Salem Witch trials indirectly helped change the American legal system due to moral and ethical issues with spectral evidence, lack of legal representation, and how the accusers only…
theme. In a famous quote, it is said that “In literature, evil often triumphs but never conquers.” This quote embodies several texts throughout history, such as William Shakespeare’s Macbeth and Harper Lee’s To Kill a Mockingbird. In these two pieces of literature, the quote is proven true through different means. In Macbeth, evil is motivated by ambition, while in To Kill a Mockingbird, it is motivated by ignorance and prejudice. In these two novels, evil is temporarily triumphant, yet it never completely conquers.…

The first book I will discuss is Sarah, Plain and Tall by Patricia MacLachlan. This historical fiction novel is set in the 19th century. To me this book meet all of the requirements that are discussed in the book about historical fiction. First of all the characters were very well rounded and complex. Sarah Elisabeth Wheaton is my favorite character because she is such a good role model. She always is nice to all even though she misses her home when she comes to the farm. The family that she has come to has lost their mother and she has come to fulfill an advertisement that the farmer, Jacob Witting (the father) put out for a wife. Sarah decides to go there for a month to decide if this family is right for…
Anne of Green Gables is an enchanting tale of a young orphan named Anne Shirley. Anne, who happens to be an eleven year old orphan at the beginning of the story, eventually gets adopted mistakenly by Matthew and Marilla Cuthbert. Matthew and Marilla were simply looking for a young male orphan who would be able to assist them with physical work around the house because Matthew was getting older, and would need an extra hand. Despite having a little girl, who was useless to them physically, they quickly fell in love with this young girl’s goodness and great qualities. It has recently been discovered that Lucy Maud Montgomery, the author of Anne of Green gables, was suffering of depression and loneliness at the time. This can be seen in certain parts and characters in the tale. Some of Anne’s experiences in the book are very similar to experiences that took place in Montgomery’s life. For Montgomery, writing was a sort of therapeutic relief that soothed her soul, therefore reflecting her emotions and troubles into Anne’s character. Throughout the novel, Anne’s imagination facilitates her life and gets her through the tough times. Without her precious imagination, this young girl would have suffered and might have missed out on all of the success she had acquired at the end…
Harriet Brooks was born on January 1, 1876 in Exeter, Ontario, Canada. She attended McGill University where she earned her bachelor’s degree in natural philosophy and mathematics in 1898. After graduating, Brooks began working with a research team headed by Ernest Rutherford at Mcgill (Hicks). She started working with electricity and magnetism for two years. She also was a tutor at Royal Victoria College. Brook’s interest in the sciences influenced her to get a master’s degree in physics in 1901, making her the first woman to receive a master’s degree at McGill University (Rayner-Canham). While getting her master’s degree, Brooks began working with radium, which had only been discovered a few years prior in 1898. After researching the emanation…
