Answer: The Witness Protection Program is necessary because it “has facilitated organized crime investigations and encouraged witnesses to give testimony without fear of retaliation” (Mallory, 2012, p. 239). The program gives law enforcement a better opportunity for investigations because a witness will be able to give them more information, and will be less likely to withhold important details (Mallory, 2012). It gives witnesses a chance to be truthful about certain circumstances because he or she will feel more comfortable knowing they are safe from danger (Mallory, 2012). As a result, more organized crime groups can be put under investigation, which can
result in putting criminals behind bars, and at the same time witnesses are there to provide assistance (Mallory, 2012). On the other hand, the program is also controversial because the witnesses will have to be under constant protection, and that takes away the chance of living freely (Mallory, 2012). Witnesses may even be given a new identity for precautionary measures and have to live in a place that is secure with protection for the rest or his or her lives (Mallory, 2012). Even though the witnesses are always protected from any harmful individuals, he or she will not live the same life as before getting involved with the program (Mallory, 2012).
