Prepare AgNO3 first: Weigh out 1.7-1.8 grams of AgNO3 and dissolve it in 50 mL deionized water. Mix in 10 drops of concentrated HNO3. Crucibles were already at a constant weight. Weighed out.24-.25 gram samples. Added 125-150 mL of deionized water and 10 drops of HNO3. Add 25 mL of AgNO3 solution to each sample. Boil gently. Collect AgX in gooch crucible. Used suction flask to dry then they were cooled and weighed.…
Adjust cell suspension volume with media so that between 15 to 100 L of cells are used for each well/dish. This small plating volume ensures that there is even cell distribution and that growth factors, drugs, or substrates in the medium are not diluted.…
The identification of the melting point of the organic acid was done to find another characteristic of the acid and to test the purity of the recrystallized pure acid. A 2-4 mm layer of unknown sample was placed into a capillary tube sealed on one end. Then the capillary tube was inserted into the side a Bibby Sterlin device. The plateau was set to 200°C on the melting point apparatus. Once the plateau temperature was reached, the sample was watched carefully. When the sample first began to melt and when it was fully melted was recorded. These numbers were the range of the melting point. A slow melting point of the unknown organic acid and a standard sample was completed next. A new plateau was set about 10°C lower than the observed melting point of the unknown sample. This time once the plateau was reached, the heating was no more than 1°C per minute. This gave a much more accurate read of both melting points. If the standard did not melt in the range listed on the label of the bottle, that meant the machine was not working properly. The standard sample and the unknown organic acid melted in their appropriate ranges.…

Using SN1 reaction mechanism with hydrochloric acid, t-Pentyl alcohol was converted to t-Pentyl chloride in an acid catalyzed reaction. The reaction took place in a separatory funnel designed to separate immiscible liquids. The crude product was extracted by transferring a solute from one solvent to another. The process of washing the solutions by phase transfer was used in order to remove impurities from the main solvent layer. Finally, the crude product was dried with anhydrous Calcium chloride and purified once more by simple distillation technique.…
Suppose that a lone asteroid happens to be passing Jupiter on a unbound orbit ( well above Jupiter's atmosphere and far from all of Jupiter moons.) Which of the following statements would be true?…
The technical goals are to build a new IT section onto the admin building to make sure all the servers are centralized. Connect all buildings to the new IT section. Make sure to provide wireless access for all the students in classrooms. Provide high speed wired internet to all faculty offices. Make sure there is a centralized back up of all data. Replace the old phone system with VIOP.…
The Keq, ratio of the concentrations of product to reactant, reveals the amount of product formed depending on the number of reactant accessible. The first reaction A+B↔C+D(Keq= 3.9X10-12) favored reactant because Keq is less than 1, meaning more reactants than product is present. Thus, the reaction displays reactant(blue). This is an extreme case where the reaction does not proceed forward readily. For second reaction I+J↔K+L(Keq=8.7x10-1), reactant(blue) is favored, but shows adequate amount of product(yellow) because its Keq is closer to 1. In S+T↔U+V(Keq=5.2x1018), another extreme case, Keq is greater than 1, so less reactant is present. Consequently, the reaction is mostly complete, favoring product(yellow) side. If a reaction either reach…

The purpose of this experiment was to perform a wittig reaction, the horner-emmons wittig specifically, reacting an aldehyde with an ylide to make an alkene. This particular variation of the wittig reaction has several advantages: It gives only the trans product; it uses a much milder base that is easier to handle; and it gives a water soluble byproduct which is easy to separate from the product. The reason that these advantages occur is a change in the structure of the ylide. Instead of a tripheylphosphine ylide, we use a diethylphosphonate ylide. The protons are much more acidic and its byproduct is negatively charged.…
