One of the main themes in Wicked is the fight of good versus evil. Although Elphaba adapts the nickname, The Wicked Witch of the West, by the end of the book, it is revealed that she is not actually the wicked one. The Wizard of Oz, who is supposedly the face of goodness, is exposed to be the evil one. Boq says that:
“People who claim that they're evil are usually no worse than the rest of us." He sighed. "It's people who claim that they're good, or anyway better than the rest of us, that you have to be wary of." (Page 213)
This is a warning to people to be suspicious of those who claim that they are good. Just because someone claims that they are pure and have good intentions, does not mean that they also don’t have ulterior motives, like the Wizard. This quote says that the people who say that they are no good are usually not any worse than most people; but the people who claim to be good, may have some secret intentions. This is something that a reader can relate to because many people have probably been deceived by who they thought a person was. The government is the Wizard of Oz and his followers. He is solving the problems that arise, but he is also secretly creating them. He will stop at nothing to stay on top. He tricks people into thinking that he is this wonderful and powerful wizard, when in reality, he is really just a cowardly man who hides behind smoke and mirrors. Dictatorship rules over the Land of Oz by the Wizard. One of Elphaba’s professors is a goat and also one of the few animals left that can speak freely due to the Ozian government capturing and silencing animals. The government believes that animals should not have a voice. When Elphaba realizes that the animals are being oppressed, she decides that someone needs to stand up and fight back. She thinks that if she tells The Wizard of Oz, he can help her to end the abuse. But once she gets to Oz, she realizes that it is the Wizard himself that is behind the animal cruelty. Dictatorship does not give people a voice. This is a very important issue that is still happening worldwide, for example, the president of Russia, Vladimir Putin.
