The Revolt of the Three Feudatories was a rebellion in the Qing Dynasty during the reign of the Kangxi Emperor. The revolt was led by the three in the Yunnan, Guangdong and Fujian provinces against the Qing central government. The Three Feudatories occupied almost half of China and caused the division among the Qing dynasty. Most of the state’s revenue was spent on the Three Feudatories. When the Kangxi Emperor came to power he reduced the power of the three lords. This is seen in the book in the chapter The Woman Who Ran Away. It talks about the year 1674, when the Three Feudatories had risen in rebellion and the troops were being sent to Yen. All women and girls suffered the most. When coming into town, the troops stripped off their clothes and rode naked on their horses after the women, tracking them down and raping them. Few escaped. P’u Sung-ling tells about a courageous story called Chang’s Wife. In this short story the women lures the rebels into her home, tricking them into thinking they could rape her however, she trapes them and burns them alive. He was an essayist, short-story writer and a dramatist who lived to the north in Tzu-ch’uan country, separated from T’an-ch’eng by a range of hills. He is a local writer who is devoted to telling the story to how it really is and for those lived there. P’u Sung-ling was one of China’s most gifted and remarkable writers. I believe that Pu Sung-ling’s writings were important to Spence’s story because it gives an inside look to the challenges and issues that the society of T’an-ch’eng faces. These primary sources paint a realistic picture to the overall concept of the novel. I enjoyed the way that Jonathan Spence used P’u Shung-ling to add a personal touch on the story.
