CHANGING MARRIAGE PATTERNS IN LEBANON
1 Marriage is probably the oldest social establishment in human history. It constitutes the basic fundamental fabric of society and an important step in starting a family to which both men and women have to be initiated. The age Of women at marriage is an important determinant of the type of society, indicating its status as “traditional” or “modern”. Age at marriage is related to a number of factors including the level of education , women’s participation in the labor force, the economic situation prevailing in a society. 2 Lebanese society has undergone major changes over the past 25 years due to the effect of the late civil war that lasted about 17 years. Large population movements, displacement , threats to physical survival, deteriorating economic conditions, as well as changes in the patterns and the levels of education among both men and women, have deeply affected Lebanese society. 3 The changes demonstrated by the growing figures of unmarried women, especially in the young age groups, and the delay of marriages to a more advanced age, can be referred to the following factors: a) Increase in the rate of educated women. The illiteracy rate among Lebanese women has dropped sharply over the past 25 years. This is coupled with an increase in the number of women who continue pre-university and university education. The most important factor in the age of marriage is education. Access to education seems to have a tremendous impact on women’s perception of themselves, their reproductive role , and their expectations of social mobility. A prevailing idea is that since marriage will hamper a woman’s ability to pursue her education, marriage is delayed until a later age. b) Women’s participation in the labor force. Lebanese society has witnessed an increase in the
