The world which banned ‘’The Second Sex’’ by Beauvoir now opts for television interviews of rape victims. Women – the mother, the sister, the wife, the friend, the goddess. Beauvoir would have been overwhelmed to know that women of this age have advanced enough to pursue a doctorate on this specific genre called feminist studies and can proudly separate themselves as feminists. But a question still arises. Despite all the present hype about the position of women in society, has their position really changed? Or like the world economy is it equally successful in garbing itself in the masquerade? The country that takes pride in being referred to as ‘’motherland’’, offers prayers to different forms of the sacred feminine, sings ‘’maa tujhe salaam’’ on 15th August also ranks first in female foeticide. Girls are married off as they are considered to be burdens, not because their parents want them to have a better life. Rape victims are accused of being seductresses while the country still contemplates over passing a bill which concerns the punishment of the rapists. However, these facts are the ones which can be gathered if one takes the pain of browsing through the daily, while some were and will be unknown as they are better kept indoors. The educated and so-called enlightened western world is also plagued with issues of domestic violence and sexual abuse. While our daughters are married off at an early age for the want of resources, the other half has to oblige as they have indulged in early-age concupiscence. Women are expected to be with in the ambit of certain specific rules created by socialization on the basis of gender construct. Who sets the rules? More so, isn’t ‘’supposed’’
