Sometimes the women are represented as Objects of Desire. For example, in goblin market, goblins tempted the girls. Once the girl falls in the trap and gives into her temptations, she is left to suffer and men move on to find their next girl.
For example, in cousin kate, woman was seduced by the men and then left alone. They must bare the consequences of their mistakes and the men that had took advantage of them were free to carry on with their lives. The lord misuses his position in his seduction because he creepily watches Kate at her gate. He lures the girl like a hunter. He praises the girl and makes Kate feel in love with him. Men are cruel and have a low view of women and the lord sees the girl as a “plaything” he explores the simile as a glove. In Cousin Kate , it says “I sit and howl in dust”, and the neighbours call her “an outcast thing” this suggests that she is a social outcast now because she has had sex out of wedlock. It also says “I moan, an unclean thing” this suggests that she were pregnant.

In novels and play writes such as Barbara Kingsolver’s, The Poisonwood Bible and Euripides, Medea, the theme Role of women arises: women in many societies are subjugated and displayed as the inferior gender, when they are truly the strongest; they carry all the pain and suffering of society, the wars and the deaths; thus they are the pedestal that keeps everyone up. In order to reveal theme Kingsolver and Euripides make use of literary devices such as symbolism, imagery and diction. Using all three literary devices Kingsolver reveals that women such as Orleana believe that they are just rag dolls that are pulled, pushed and just there, even so realize how strong they really are; that if it was not for them their children would not be able to live. Medea on the other hand represents all the pains and struggles of women and is attempting to inform all women that they have the power and must stand up for themselves.…

In the beginning of both the poem and story the authors give a very visual description of the women. They are both considered to appear on the outside as if they are "a faerys child" - beautiful. But when you look into their eyes a sense of being "wild" is within them. The wildness that the men see in their eyes foreshadows their merciless nature. The wildness alludes to and foreshadows the womens animalistic and heartless actions. In both storys the women seduce multiple men with their physical attractiveness in order to gain control of them and make the situation benefit them. The authors use imagery in their texts by explaining in detail the womens outstanding physical features in order to make the reader picture the women in the same way that the narrator does. Steinbeck and Keats effectivly project the images of the women into the minds of the reader.…

The interaction between genders, importance of female education, and hardships of life seem to be a language that can be relatable to most women. As the world continues to change, the roles women play in literature will continue to be a great easel for the evolution of gender roles. If I were to take an even further view into women in literature, I would try to see how the circumstances of the lives of women writers play on their depictions of the world in their…

Janice Mirikitani uses similes in her poem to express desperation and hopelessness. In the first few lines, she says, “How many notes written… ink smeared like birdprints in the snow.” This is showing how the voice of the play has written letters to her parents, but after so many they just become a blur, meshing together until they are non-decipherable. In Hamlet, when the king is confessing his sins and praying, he states that he is “like a man to double business bound.” Here Shakespeare is showing how the king is torn between his feelings toward his brother and the allure of being a king. After this line, he says, “My stronger guilt defeats my strong intent.” His guilt and his greed are causing stress like a man who is obligated to two forms of business with no idea where to start.…

Since what seems like the beginning of human civilization, the role of the female has varied from society to society. This role is symbolically represented in The Odyssey by Homer and A Tale of Two Cities by Charles Dickens, two of the most famous works of literature, and yet two of the most different. In each book, the author uses a rich variety of symbolism to express themes he finds necessary to enrich the story. In both books, feminine figures are used as symbolism to represent the role of the female in the society of the author.…

Women were motivated by societal expectations. A valued woman was obedient, passive and sweet. Bianca epitomizes these qualities and shapes her behavior around them. She exchanges vicious words with her sister in private, but while in the company of suitors she turns mild. Bianca’s father and her suitors determine who she marries, showing her surrender to men’s power and acceptance of obedience. In Kate’s concluding speech, she says, “A woman moved is like a fountain troubled, muddy, ill-seeming, thick, bereft of beauty, and while it is so, none…will deign to sip or touch one drop of it.”(5.2.151) Kate admits that an unpleasant, angry wife is undesirable and useless. Certainly no man will consider an ugly, rude woman worthy of his company. She finally relents to Petruchio’s taming and takes a woman’s normal place in the social hierarchy. Women conform to society’s strict expectations.…

Male superiority and the subordination of women are sustained with the conformity of both men and women. The male domination seems to be a social norm accepted and followed by al people in the society. Men are showing their stereotyped perception on women, like Leonato jokes about his daughter as ‘Her mother hath many times told me so’ and Benedick ‘as being a professed tyrant to their sex’ implies their confirmed perception of women to justify their superiority in the society. Women are viewed as a possession and property of men that Benedick brings out the idea of purchase to ‘buy her that you inquire after her’. Women are linked with the image of cuckold when Benedick regards that ‘I will have a recheat winded in my forehead’ and ‘pluck off the bull’s horn and set them on forehead’. The idea of cuckold focuses on woman’s disloyalty that brings out the mentality of men that women are wicked as ‘beauty is a witch’ and women do not deserve as much as men do. With their stereotyped image, the male superiority is confirmed by men. On the other hand, the readiness of women shows that they conform to the male domination and willing to submit to men. Hero…
