C2- Britain, C1860-1930: the changing position of women and the suffrage question:
a) The sources strongly suggest that the main reason for withholding the vote for women was due to the fact that by nature they were physically weaker than men.
Source 10 shows that withholding the vote from women was due to them being physically weaker than men, the source shows this because it states “…consequence of their nature”. This shows that women are physically weaker than men because it hints that by nature they are not physically as strong as men, and allowing them the vote would be going against a women’s nature and therefore should not be allowed. Source 11 supports source 10 in the fact that by giving women the vote would be seen as un-natural. You can see this because source 11 states “women’s vote would not represent the physical force”. This supports source 10’s idea of being un-natural because it shows that women could vote due to being physically weaker than man, and by allowing them to vote would show this and make women and men seem equal which was deemed un-natural. Source 10 also states “it is set out in the scriptures… story of creation makes it plain… made for the benefit of man… Adam shall rule over Eve… vote is defying the authority of Christian religion”. This statement shows that by allowing women the vote would mean they were defying God’s wishes and the scriptures. This statement also shows that women were the ‘property of men’ and by giving them the vote would be looked down by God as it would be unnatural for men and women to equal. By saying “the story of creation makes it plain” shows that men really believed that women getting the vote would reflect in men being as physically weaker as women.
Source 11 also suggests that the main reason for withholding the vote from women was due to the fact that by nature they were physically weaker than men. You can see this in source 11 as it states “women…relate to physical… violence...
