The lack of women equality was common in history and was not seen to be abnormal for decades. Xin Jin depicts how women willing rented their body as property to ensure a better future for themselves. This document helps the reader understand the women challenges by providing precise instructions and penalties the women received if they refused to obey their master/mistress. Xin Jin conveyed to the audience that these women had to make sure they would not be impregnated or ill or their jobs be revoked. In order for the immigrants to proceed without prolonging their journey, the Chinese immigrants had to meet the requirements. Readers can imagine that women that lived up under this oath experienced physical, verbal, and mental abuse while working up under this occupation.
The immigrants were oblivious to the fact that were abusing their bodies by providing permission to people of wealth to pre-own them for as sex slaves. The women lack of funds and living conditions in China forced the women to remotely to become prostitutes for a flight of “freedom” in California. The women were used for men sexual pleasure at the time of their needs exemplifies how the women were considered property. These Chinese women could have worked their debt off in other areas, but since there was a lack of power amongst the women community- they did not have many options. Xin Jin deliberately institutionalized the Chinese women as immigrants as prostitutes, in order for these women to provide themselves a better future.
