Space exploration is the ongoing discovery and exploration of celestial structures in outer space by means of continuously evolving and growing space technology. The whole subject of space exploration is so vast, from the V2 Missile to the most recent launches of today. So, to narrow it down, this essay will cover some space exploration involving women. 536 people have gone to space. 58 of those were women. Eight of those flew in the Soviet/Russian Space program, two in the Chinese program, and the other 49 flew with NASA. (Women in Space, 2015) parenthetical citation

Others raised concerns about hypothetical health risks. They feared that microgravity might increase the incidence of retrograde menstruation. Blood might flow up the fallopian tubes into the abdomen, causing pain and other health problems. No one actually did any experiments to see if this really would be a problem, so there was no data to support or disprove these fears. As it turned out, female astronauts get their period in space just like they do on Earth, and no menstrual problems have been associated with living in microgravity. After completing her studies at Stanford, Ride applied to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). Besting thousands of applicants, Ride was selected as one of NASA's first six female astronauts and began spaceflight training in 1978. Ride started her aeronautics career on the ground, serving as a capsule communicator as part of the ground-support crew for the second (November 1981) and third (March 1982) shuttle flights. Until her first flight in the Challenger, where she became the first U.S. woman in space, along with two other specialists. As one of the three mission specialists on the STS-7 mission, she played a vital role in helping the crew deploy communications satellites, conduct experiments and make use of the first Shuttle Pallet Satellite.
