Women In Sports Should Not Be Coed
The history of sports is changing. There are many changes being made to make sports more safe and civilized. Most of all sports are becoming coed , making most of them available to females . So the big question is , should sports be coed ? Sports should not be coed due to the discrimination against women. A misfortune to this is that females are biased against to be only supporters and weak players . Since the beginning of sports , women and men have played by different rules . Men for one play rough and are more masculine , undermining women as soft , weak players. “The gendered discourses , policies , and belief systems in sports typically privilege men and disadvantage women making it seem natural to view athletes who play ultra-masculine …show more content…
Men feel like playing with women makes them weaker than the women they are playing with. Men want to be the ones in charge. Observations and interview data collected over a time period shows that the equity that is so called present was overshadowed by negativity as the modifications created stereotyping to the opposite gender while in the participation of sport(Wood and Garn). The stereotyping is not just coming from the men , but women are tired of being the players that are known as weak and soft. They feel as if they should fight back . A study has been created in the world of flag football to show that modifications are creating sexism(Wood and Garn). Flag football is not a contact sport , but men feel as if there is not real contact , there is no need to play the sport. Not only do the men think they are superior , but they think they are the rulers of sports. They do not even consider cheerleading as a sport when cheerleading obviously requires muscular fitness and a tumbling skill . They feel as if they play the role of the king and that women play the role of the queen. Although coed sports can be discriminatory, there are many reasons that could show that sexism is becoming a non habit

Within sport, gender has played a huge role the way it affects one’s involvement in participation. As I will explore sociologically in this essay, there are a great number of reasons why this has occurred and still does occur, and the way in which pre-conceived ideas and stereotypes along with many other things affect sport involvement.…

An issue that I have always been concerned with is how much attention male sports get, while female sports get pushed aside. Males and females put forth the same amount of effort and the same amount of hard work towards the sports they play, and in return males dominate the limelight. Arguments opposing this show that males are obviously better athletes than females. According to Mariah Burton Nelson, controversial activist and author, football, baseball and other manly sports in the United States are not games, but a culture which offer a pre-civil rights world where white men, as owners, coaches and umpires, still rule. In the manly sports, men learn to think about and talk about women in contempt. It is common practice for boys to be belittled as "wusses" or worse if they are not tough or brutal enough or willing to deny their own pain or the pain of others.…

In this article “Move Over Boys, Make Room in the Crease,” Sara Maratta discusses a controversial issue of women are becoming more accepted into the sports world, not only as fans and players but also as voices in sports journalism. However, men still dominate on all levels. Why? Some argue because of stereotype. From this perspective, who really cares why women are not receiving the same equality as men? Are women being used as sex symbols, are they really being accepted in the sports world or is the sports world just creating balance.…

Co-ed sports should be allowed. The teams would have the best of both genders on one team, there would be more competition to make the team, and there would be better opponents to make for better games. Title IX

Throughout history, people generally associated women with domestic and subservient activities. Women were not encouraged to play outdoors or get dirty because such actions did not embody a proper lady’s behavior. Because of society’s deeply ingrained ideas of traditional gender roles, women would not have been able to fully participate in the sports culture without a catalyst such as Title IX. Although some argue that Title IX causes America’s overall competitiveness in sports to decrease and men’s sports to suffer, statistics show that men still have a dominant representation in college athletics. Because sports represents a major aspect of American culture and should fully encourage the participation of both genders and since enough opportunities for male athletes can be provided while still proportionally representing Title IX mandates, the benefits of Title IX providing opportunities for women outweigh the potentially negative effects on men’s sports.…

There are many aspects why female and male athletes should not compete together. Although one reason may be because of physiological differences, societal barriers also prevent female athletes from competing with males. What it means to be male or female is one of the hardest things to decipher. This is one of the more bigger struggles between masculinity and femininity. One institution that specifically targets this idea of gender differences is professional sports. Women are challenged because of these gender differences to be accepted into a male dominated institution. Female athletes are encouraged and in many cases forced to under appreciate themselves by the media because of sports. Our society tends to under appreciate women who play…

As a female soccer player, I can attest to the sexism that prevails in professional soccer today. For centuries, society has told women they must always look dainty and pristine to attract a man. When a woman becomes covered in dirt and sweat during a game, she is no longer aesthetically pleasing; therefore, men deem her sport dull and worthless. In soccer, the term “female athlete” is an oxymoron; a female cannot be a real athlete, and an athlete cannot be a real female. Recently, in the Women’s World Cup, this blatant prejudice surfaced when FIFA forced athletes to play on turf despite safety complaints and lawsuits. I attended the game between the United States and Germany, and I cringed as I watched the women’s heads hit the hard ground.…

    Gender Barriers in Sports

Gender is defined as an ongoing cultural process that socially constructs differences between men and women. This day in age, men still have more privileges than women do. Men have more wealth and power, many role-models are males, and women are seen as child raisers. Dr. Jack C. Watson says that women in sports face such things as “social isolation.” Many women have been put down for sports participation because it is more of a male kind of thing to do and were expected to be more cheerleaders than the actual players. As stated in the Seventh Edition Child Development by Laura E. Berk, “Women is more compassionate than man and has a greater propensity to tears…But the male….is more disposed to give assistance in danger, and is more courageous than the female.” (Aristotle, cited in Miles, 1935)…

However the popularity of woman's in “men's” sports has risen, and in the majority of our society many girls are pushed to join sports, as much as boys are, such as soccer or basketball, and are placed into leagues where they gain experience for when/if they decide to join their school leagues. As time progresses, I do believe that sports will be seen as vital socialization for men and women, if not in the generation of my generations, children, then in their children. Those of my generation where sports have been a big part of their life, will wish to share that with their children. The joys of being on a team, learning how to cooperate and work with others, no matter how different is vital to human beings regardless of gender. The norm of sports being for 'men' seems to be shifting as more professional athletes are coming out with their sexual orientation. Gay men are often ridiculed and regarded as weak, or 'not real men' the players coming out or demonstrating, “I'm gay, yet I had a successful athletic career in spite of/regardless of my…

Our nation has invested itself, economically and socially, in sports for more than a century. To the athletic elite, there is the opportunity to turn their childhood passion into their livelihood. From the four most recognized professional sports in America - Baseball (MLB) , Football (NFL) , Basketball (NFL), and Hockey (NHL) - only a select handful of athletes reach the professional level, and even fewer remain at that level and see long-term success. Our nation as seen a continuous evolution in professional sports when regarding the integration of race and gender into the games. It provides a unique experience to view sporting events, one being performed by female athletes and the other by male athletes, from a sociological mindset and take…

Sport teams should not be coed because coed sports cause discomfort on teams and more injures depending on the size and structure of the opposite gender. The first reason why sports shouldn’t be coed is because it causes discomfort among both genders. “Boys and girls might be more comfortable playing sports with the same sex. Boys might fear being too aggressive with girls on the playing field. From a social perspective, they might fear failing in front of girls who they like socially.…
