In the late 1800’s woman had to fight for their rights to vote. The reason was during that time Men viewed themselves as the only authority for being able to vote. Men believed since they made all the money and they themselves could only vote on important decisions like whose president and what will be taxed or not taxed. …show more content…
Men also believed since they are the only ones who received an education that they are the only intelligent ones. Males so believed that women should not be involved in jobs that requires them to not be home and taking care of the children. In the late 1800’s women were the primary care givers to the children, being out the house for long times would prohibit them from taking care of the kids. Men also believed that only their opinions mattered being the race that was more physically stronger they thought women cannot have a say I things.
Women in the late 1800’s also fought for their right to own land. The reason is that women could not own property like men could. The name of a woman could not be on the deed of the paper because they are not arguable to own property. Men thought just because they are more dominant race in terms of physical strength they could take care of their farm or property and defend it from people who want to take it over or trespassers. Women could also not own property because they could not afford it seeing as men earned more money from their jobs women were at a disadvantage because they could never even come close to having enough money to purchase property. Men who passed down their property such as a family farm would only give it to male relatives because once a woman married all their belongings and the woman herself would belong to the man and his family. In a way they had to rights as all they were treated like a property that was not treated as bad as a slave but almost similar. Property back then was also viewed as a form of wealth among the rest of the town’s people or just in society in general. Social class back then and still till this day is the way people are treated and viewed and women could not be anything without their family.
Equality from men is the number one cause women had to fight for.
Besides not owning property and being able to vote they were not paid equal to men. Men could do more physical labor jobs compared to women. Therefore they were not given jobs like construction for example. Blue collar jobs dominated the workforce in the late 1800’s. The jobs for women were simpler like being a waitress or being a nurse. Women were also not given the chance to earn an education because men did not think they needed to have an education. They believed women should stay home and take care of the children and do simple housework and never do anything else besides take care of the …show more content…
family.
Even though women were not treated equal to men, women did not have it too terrible. They did not make as much salary wise as men but the husband in the marriage did in fact support the wives as long as they remained loyal and did the chores around the house such as cooking, cleaning and taking care of the children. Owning property was kind of a problem but men typically worked and farmed on the land making sense that would be the primary owners of the land they worked on not their wives. Although women were not very educated or even given the opportunity to be educated they still managed to fine good jobs.
Although women were treated unequal in the late 1800’s they had some ups in downs but they still had to fight.
Common tasks now like being able to vote and owning property are no longer an issue because of the laws of equality the American government has implemented into the constitution. Before these were major issues and it shows now how far society has come to where those simple things are almost forgotten of how much women had to fight for. Women even to this day feel like they don’t have equal rights and that is still true in some parts. They still do not have the equal pay that they would like and still are looked down as they are not superior or equal to
men.
