Women On Wellness
wow latenight eatingDuring the 4th Allure Vanguard Women on Wellness(WOW) seminar, a guest speaker at the event, Dr Oladapo Ashiru, a Professor of Anatomy and Reproductive Endocrinologist gave this healthful warning that foods eaten after 8.00 pm, were essentially poisonous to your body systems.

“Any food eaten after 8.00 pm is poison, as the intestine shuts down after 8.00 pm. You should try to eat before 8.00 pm to avoid accumulation of undigested foods that are harmful to the organs.”

The health don explain further that, you should strive to eat your meals before 8.00 pm, to maintain good health and avoid undue strain and stress to your digestive systems. He said the ideal way is to eat slowly, chew well and drink water 30 minutes to one hour after meals to aid food digestion in its real state as water dilutes the nutrients.

While it is natural that foods eaten should not go into the digestive system, swallowing our foods straight without chewing deprives the food from being broken down."

So, don't be a victim of late night eaters but strive to get your dinner ready before 7pm and eat at that time. With such a high target time, you will be cultivating the habit of eating your dinner

When a human sees or smells food the salivary glands are the first thing to react in the digestive system. Once the food is placed into the mouth, it is then taken over by the teeth, tongue, and saliva. These three are what help make the food moist and small enough to be swallowed. At this point the food then becomes what is called bolus. The bolus is then traveled through the pharynx then esophagus, and into the stomach. When the food travels through the pharynx, the epiglottis makes sure that the food paces by the without interring the lungs. Once the bolus enters the stomach, it is then broken down even further by the acids within the stomach. The bolus becomes a little more digested before leaving the stomach. Once the food is at this stage, it is then called Chyme. Chyme is a semiliquid food. It normally leaves the stomach within two to six hours. The small intestine is what does most of the digesting and takes the nutrients from the food. It has help from the liver, pancreas, and gallbladder. The small intestine is made up of three parts, these parts are called, the jejunum, the ileum, and the duodenum. Anything that is not taken for nutrients in the small intestine goes to the large intestine. At this time it travels through what is called the sphincter. The sphincter prevents any of the food to go back into the small…

Digestion first begins with the mouth. When you put food into your mouth your teeth and saliva helps to break down food into small molecules that absorbs into your bloodstream, your tongue finishes this process off by pushing the food into your throat in order for you to swallow. Food then goes through the esophagus and the esophagus muscles pushes the food into the stomach. While in the stomach digestive juices such as enzymes and acids assists in breaking down the food into paste. The food and digestive juices mixes and remains in the stomach for at least two hours. After departing the stomach food then goes through the small intestine. This is the most important part of digestion. The food paste travels through the small intestine and nutrients such as carbohydrates, minerals, proteins, fats, and vitamins are absorbed by villi and then goes through the bloodstream. The food which is undigested then goes through the large intestine as paste. Water is taken from the paste and it then becomes solid waste. The solid waste gathers inside the rectum which is at the end of the large intestine. Lastly, the waste goes through the anus (Hillendale Health, 2013).…

The way that the digestive system works is pretty simple to remember. First you bite on something eatable, then the enzymes in your saliva start digesting the carbohydrates. Once the food bits are in your stomach, they are drowned in gastric juice, which is made up of the enzyme called pepsin and a acid called hydrochloric acid . The enzyme and the acid start to break down the food and by doing that, nutrients are released. Digested food then from the stomach is pumped into the small intestine, which the gets flooded by fluids and enzymes from the liver , or better know as the bile , and from the pancreas.…

“The Omnivore’s Dilemma, A Natural History Of Four Meals.” by Michael Pollan is an incredibly information-dense review of our modern day food industry. Pollan promises to use facts, statistics, and personal experience to take the reader on a journey that will ultimately discover a definitive answer to “what should I have for dinner?” This book had an interesting effect on me which I will discuss by first explaining my food industry related knowledge prior to reading the book, what the book has taught me, and finally, go over what I call “The Omnivore's Dilemma’s Dilemma.”…

The path that food follows through the digestive system is very interesting. First you put the food to your mouth, take a bite, and chew. The salivary glands begin the digestive process at the sight and smell of food. After food enters the mouth and is moistened by saliva, it transforms into a bolus. Once the bolus leaves the mouth, it moves into the pharynx, where it can be swallowed. The bolus then moves from the pharynx to the stomach. Once the bolus reaches the stomach, it is mixed with acid secretion to transform the bolus into chyme (the semifluid mass into which food is converted by gastric secretion and which passes from the stomach into the small intestine). Food is partially digested in the stomach and chyme usually empties from the stomach in two to six hours. This time frame can be determined by the size and type of meal ingested. Although, the liver, gallbladder, and pancreas are located in close proximity of the stomach, they contribute to the digestive process once the chyme reaches the small intestine. The small intestine is a tube shaped organ of the digestive tract where digestion of ingested food is completed and the majority of nutrient absorption occurs. The small intestine is divided into three parts, known as the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum. The large intestine includes both the colon and the rectum. Additional absorption of water and some vitamins and minerals occurs in the colon. Materials not absorbed in the colon are exerted from the body as waste products in the feces. The end of the colon is attached to the anus, which is the external opening of the digestive tract where the feces are eliminated from the body. This is how the digestive process works. Fascinating…

The digestive system consists of seven parts in digesting food. The first part in digestive system starts in your mouth. (In the digestive process starts even before you even start to eat.) (www.gesa.com) (When you smell the aroma of the food your brain sends a signal to your brain, then that signal goes to your mouth that puts your saliva glands into work producing the saliva that helps break down the food you chew.) (www.gesa.com) The time food enters into your mouth the saliva instantly starts breaking down the food particles. To make the food easier to digest your teeth help make the food particles smaller and easier to swallow, and for better absorption.…

We all know how the bad days go, sometimes you may be able to grab some finger food that you can stuff in your mouth on the only 2 free minutes you have for the day. Water? Forget it. Taking time to go to the bathroom? Some days you’re lucky if you go once or twice in a full 12 hour shift. Do we all know how bad this is for you? Yes. Do we still do it? Of course. Time is often not on our side, and our body suffers because of it. When surveyed, “half of respondents said they felt they had enough time to eat a healthy, balanced diet, while the other half said time pressures prevented them eating well. However, perhaps more significantly, 55% admitted to currently being ‘overweight’ or ‘very overweight’” ("How happy and," 2008).…

I go to campus every day except Sunday. There are many activities during weekdays. After spending my day and doing what I always do everyday, I go home. But, sometimes I go home not on time, because I have some appointments with my friends. If I have been in the house, the first thing I should do is eating. I always eat some food or munch the snack. After that, I do my assignment and listen to the music at my bed room. I don’t watch TV much, because in my opinion watching TV is not really giving me advantages, it’s just a useless thing which only spend my time.…

I do not want to waste my time by lining up for an hour just to buy a plate of nasi lemak. I got tons of assignments to do and I prefer eating instant noodles rather than buying food there. However, it does not mean that I always eat instant noodles as it is not good for my health. Staying in this urban area, I really have to save up. Everything is costly now.
