Women did not begin attending college in equal numbers to men until as recently as 1980. The right to education in America is a battle that all women and those of different races won years ago, however, but how does this compare to Afghanistan or Iraq where women are still fighting for education and the right to it. Women are enrolled in colleges just like men and they finish their bachelors, however, many degrees that require higher education are dominated by men. The one thing in this article that I don’t really agree with/understand too comprehensively is the gender pay gap. Women do earn less according to studies, however these studies are very broad, they don’t take into consideration the jobs that are being done by men and women. It’s the 21st century, and to make a decent amount of money one should focus their attention to STEM subjects. If we look at the graduation rates for STEM fields, these areas of study are dominated by…

In the article, "Why Gender Equality Stalled", it expresses how women were able to create equality between men and women even though it took many years to progress. The article focuses mostly on how feminists were able to transform the attitudes of women in society. The article celebrates the 50th anniversary of "The Feminine Mystique" which was a best seller that fired up women to start movements for equal oppurtunities. After reading the article I think Americans responded to Betty Fredan's book the way they did because it gave them an image of a different way of life that bettered people who were of the same sex as them. After people read "The Feminine Mystique" I think women were able to visualize a realistic hope for a life that was full of more oppurtunities.…

Just education does not discriminate based on gender, class, or race. It does not see one for how popular one is and it has no concern for the new type of shoes or new phone. Before civil rights activists had emerged, it was a crime in America to attend school if you were not of the dominant race. America has advanced in positive steps towards having a more integrated educational system. The mere principle of attending school became a law in America. The American judicial system has noticed the importance of obtaining a "good" education. America has many public schools across the nation to remove the reason for one unable to pay for…

Valenti writes this essay in hopes of disillusioning women that believe they have the same equal rights and treatments that men have in America. She conveys a certain emotionally upset tone in her work (mainly due to her being a woman) to grab the reader 's attention. She uses selection of detail to show the hardships of women not only in America, but in other countries as well. Education has traditionally been available to the wealthier, excluding minority groups, including women. As a young woman in today’s society, I appreciate the opportunity to be able to get a free, public education, especially since I come from a family who did not have access to those same opportunities. To me, education is the gateway to the world; it increases human capital, empowers, and creates a well-rounded person. From my perspective, education increases an individual’s human capital by imparting knowledge and skills. A high school diploma in the early 1940s and 50s was considered an advanced degree: the equivalent to a college degree today.…

Equality of education in American schools refers to the provision of similar opportunities, expectations, and support in education for people from both gender as well as for people from different backgrounds (DeMarrais, Kathleen& Margaret 291). It refers to the leveling of the playing ground, whereby no particular social class retains an upper hand over the other. As such, gender equality means that boys and girls, blacks and whites etcetera need to receive equal treatment in schools. In the contemporary world, many forms of race and sex discrimination affect access and treatment in schools. There are many ways such discrimination affects the access of education by people who are…

In the American culture, women are starving, and gorging themselves, their children, and their loved ones. Some women hate and want to get rid of everything that makes them female; a pear shaped body and curves (Keresey). Many eating disorder specialists agree that chronic dieting is a direct consequence of the social pressure on American females to achieve a nearly impossible thinness. Women are taught from childhood to judge the worth of their bodies looking at an emaciated standard of beauty, which the media has been blamed for upholding and possibly even creating (Schneider). To explore the broader context of this controversial issue, this paper draws upon several aspects on how common body dissatisfaction in adolescent females is,…
