Women's National Basketball Association: The Invention Of Basketball
The history of the game of basketball is unique to other sports. Instead of the game gradually developing into a sport over time, the invention of basketball was immediate. In eighteen-ninety-one, when a local YMCA gave him the task of creating a game for students, James Naismith designed a game he named “basketball”. From there, the game quickly grew into a national and worldwide phenomenon. Only forty-five years later, in nineteen-thirty-six, basketball was introduced to the Olympics games. Founded in nineteen-forty-nine, the National Basketball Association, a collection of professional men’s teams, became the nation’s hallmark league. Finally, the WNBA (Women’s National Basketball Association) was created in nineteen-ninety-six. Now, basketball

Truer to the game by Randy Horick is a short story, possibly an excerpt from something larger, about how women’s basketball more clearly reflects the essence of the game. He claims that for a multitude of reasons that I will discuss later in this, that women’s collegiate basketball and the WNBA are representative of the true nature of the sport. More shots from behind the 3-point line, less fouls, plays that happen at a speed you can understand, and more behind the scenes stuff is what differentiates men and women’s. He cites pressure to win as his main argument for the cause of the differences in the two. This pressure to win creates an environment of hostility; athletes only play at the collegiate level for a few short years, not earning…

James Naismith was the creator of basketball. He created it in 1891 to condition young athletes in the winter. The “hoop” was a peach basket and the ball was a soccer styled ball. There were many rules for the new game. He created it in a YMCA gym in Springfield, Massachusetts. His team of eighteen was divided into two teams of nine and then the peach baskets were nailed above their heads. Every time one would score a basket, the game was stopped for the janitor to get up on a ladder and retrieve the ball. Later on, the bottoms of the “hoops” were taken out and they became a (sort of) real basket.…

Exposure is an important piece of the puzzle in pushing for equality, not only in the world of basketball, but the world of sports as a whole. Although, the WNBA is steadily climbing as the Forbes list reported “the league welcomed its current president, Laurel J. Richie, known for her marketing acumen, and introduced Boost Mobile as a marquee marketing partner. In 2012, the draft moved to ESPN’s headquarters. In 2013, the WNBA launched a new brand identity, extended its television partnership with ESPN, the "3 To See" rookies gained mainstream attention, and season 17 ended with record growth.” (Glass) The WNBA may not be on the same financial level or branding level as the NBA currently, but the league is now equipped with franchise owners…

This emphasis on character growth and the development of a man into a gentleman, is what influenced James Naismith to create the game of Basketball in 1891 (Harris, 2014, p.1). Moreover, men would desire to play it for benefits other than just physical activity. Loyalty, self control, self sacrifice and teamwork, the foundations of Christianity and altruistic Christian manhood, were the moral principles that basketball originally promoted (Carroll, 2003, p. 197).…

The N.F.L. is the King Kong, the N.B.A. pounds its chest and Major League Baseball enjoys an inheritance, but the W.N.B.A. the most successful women’s teams sports league in American history continues to fly under the radar. The WNBA's financial viability has been a continuous topic since the league formed in 1997 as an offshoot of the NBA. In many ways the W.N.B.A. would not exist without Title IX, the federal mandate that, among other things, created equal opportunity for women in college sports. The challenge for the W.N.B.A. is to cultivate a widening fan base that really cares about women’s basketball.…

I’ve been intrigued by the sport of basketball since I was five. At this age, my parents shared with me that my cousin, Suzie was an Olympic Champion in basketball. With her petite, 5’4 stature, she was compelled to practice and hustle intensely, and she did. People may think that basketball is only a game, but it’s way more than that. It teaches sportsmanship and character. It causes you to persevere and never go down easy. Even though society may think basketball only helps physical development, it has taught me way more and shaped who I am…

Basketball was invented in December 1891 by the Canadian clergyman, educator, and physician James Naismith. Naismith introduced the game when we was an instructor at the Young Men's Christian Association Training School (now Springfield College) in Springfield, Massachusetts. At the request of his superior, Dr. Luther H. Gulick, he organized a vigorous recreation suitable for indoor winter play. The game involved elements of American football, soccer, and hockey, and the first ball used was a soccer ball. Teams had nine players, and the goals were wooden peach baskets affixed to the walls. By 1897-1898, teams of five became standard. The game rapidly spread nationwide and to Canada and other parts of the world, played by both women and men; it also became a popular informal outdoor game. U.S. servicemen in World War II (1939-1945) popularized the sport in many other countries. James Naismith devised a set of thirteen rules of basketball: 1. The ball may be thrown in any direction with one or both hands. 2. The ball may be batted in any direction with one or both hands, but never with the fist. 3. A player cannot run with the ball. The player must throw it from the spot on which he catches it, allowance to be made for a man running at good speed. 4. The ball must be held in or between the hands. The arms or body must not be used for holding it. 5. No shouldering, holding, pushing, striking or tripping in any way of an opponent. The first infringement of this rule by any person shall count as a foul; the second shall disqualify him until the next goal is made or, if there was evident intent to injure the person, for the whole of the game. No substitution shall be allowed. 6. A foul is striking at the ball with the fist, violations of Rules 3 and 4 and such as described in Rule 5. 7. If either side make three consecutive fouls…
