Women's roles in society were perceived as less important and not as needed asthan men's in shakespeare's time. Women were expected to obey and serve men in that time. At the end of the play Taming of The Shrew, the men make a bet on to see whose wife will listen and come to them. Petruchio says, “Well, I say so and therefore, for assurance lets each one send unto his wife, and he whose wife is most obedient to come at first when he doth send for her shall win the wager which we will propose.” (Shakespeare, 5.2.67-71) he basically is saying, whoevers wife is the most obedient and listens to her husband the husband will win something for the husband. Also in the play, Bianca was bet on by men for marriage. This shows women were treated like objects for sale. Women were also seen as incapable of doing work and taking care of themselves. Women have more equality in the workplace. They are able to work and even succeed in their fields. 47% of women are working in the U.S. (United States Department of Labor) with 4.8% of the women holding CEO positions in fortune 1000 companies (Huffington Post, Duberman), showing women are working and succeeding.
