In the nineteenth century women’s rights were overlooked. “All men are created equal” but for women this was overlooked. Women were denied their “unalienable rights”. Some women like Catherine E. Beecher and Elizabeth Cady Stanton started to demand that women should not live in a society made for men. The NAWSA tried to get nation support to give women the right to vote. In August 26, 1920 Congress passed the amendment for women to vote.
The media at the time made sure that it spread the women suffrage movement. Alice Paul organized a parade to bring attention to there message/cause but to there surprise they kept on getting interrupted and angry crowds would brutally fight the marchers. Women suffrage movement also tried
to do a hunger strike and this went crazy all over the media at this point the public supported the movement.
When president Wilson was re-elected in 1915 he refused to let women vote. In the winter of 1917 people from the women suffrage movement protested in front of the Whitehouse for women to have the right to vote. The women got arrested.
At this time USA entered World War 1 and president Wilson said “we shall fight for the things which we have always carried nearest our hearts--for democracy.”. Women feared if they stopped fighting they would lose their ground so they would protest in front of the white house with signs saying “democracy should begin at home”. The public thought it was selfish that these women are protesting at a time of war. In May 1919 the House of Representatives passed the amendment.
In my opinion the women suffrage women was the best thing that happened. As back in the day women basically had no rights. The effect of this movement is really big as now a days you can see women working driving and equal to men.
