Wonderful Century American Nationalism
Before 1815, Europe went through the Renaissance and the Scientific Revolution. In both time periods, Europe and advanced and had many revolutions that resulted in vast amounts of nationalism. The results of these revolutions was the Wonderful Century, a time when every country was equal and there were no threats between nations. The Wonderful Century however, ended after 100 years because national boundaries were made without any thought for national cultures so nationalism built up over the 100 years and exploded the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution caused many revolutions between countries and later led to the Victorian Age. These revolutions all happened because of nationalism. In 1848, the Italian States had multiple revolutions against the Austrian Empire, but failed. This however, gave them even more nationalism and pride and led to the formation of an army. The King of Piedmont-Sardinia and a man named Camillo Benso Cavour, fought the Austrian Empire in the northern Italian States, while a man named Giuseppi Garibaldi, fought in the southern Italian States. Finally in 1861, the kingdom of Italy was formed. This was all possible because there were people who believed that Italy should be one united nation and that the Austrian Empire did not belong there. There also was a big revolution in the German States. The people of the German States decided to group up and unite Germany. They united Germany in 1871 and Wilhelm I became the first Emperor of Germany. Later the fought in the Franco-Prussian War and gained Alsace-lorraine.     Italian people were living in the control of foreign rulers. The ideal Italian leaders were Giuseppe Mazzini, Cavour, and Giuseppe Garibaldi.     Nationalism was a key factor in building nations. Throughout the years Italians were growing impatient and dissatisfied under foreign rule. Count Cavour was responsible for the brains behind the unification of Italy.
