Sadly there are some disadvantages to biomass. Wood burning is harmful and releases air pollution. Yet that is only one out of five of the resources in biomass. If not properly controlled, the end result gases may be dangerous. A biomass boiler is slightly more expansive than a regular oil boiler. Also the boilers take up more space than any regular old oil…

In a Grate-Kiln System, the traveling grate is used to dry and preheat the pellets. A refractory lined rotary kiln is used for induration. In a straight grate, the grate cars have to go through the drying and induration zones. So, a deep bed of pellets with a hearth layer is required. What this means is that a modern Grate-Kiln System will have a power requirement of less than 20 kwh/ton, while a straight grate system will use over 35 kwh/ton. Another part of the Grate Kiln System process flexibility is because there is only one burner. The kiln burner can use liquid gas, or solid (coal or wood) fuels separately or in combination. One burner reduces maintenance costs and improves fuel efficiency. In the Grate Kiln System, 95% of the air used for combustion is +1,000 C air from the cooler. A straight grate, with up to 50 burners, cannot match this level of energy recovery.…

    Pet Coke

Abstract: Petcoke is not just a refinery’s by-product any more, but a real alternative costeffective fuel that can be successfully fired in CFB boilers either alone or in blends with coal. With its specific ash content, which is typically lower than 1 percent and very high sulfur, petcoke is an effective source of energy increasing plant economy. Foster Wheeler CFB technology allows efficient combustion of petroleum coke. Numerous references are located mostly in United States or China reaching utility capacities of 300 MWe with the first commercial application dating back to 1984. Now in Europe Foster Wheeler delivered efficient and fuel-flexible petcoke-fired boilers to Bulgaria and Romania allowing customers to use not only standard coals, but also alternative fuels of different origin and properties. In spite of high sulfur content of the fuel reaching up to 8 percent the environmental performance of the units is excellent allowing to achieve low emission limits without external DeSOx and DeNOx installations. To meet the customer’s specific requirements the design allowed the usage of the local limestone or co-firing of heavy oil together with petcoke. Studying the potential of alternative fuels such as petcoke CFB technology appears to be the perfect solution since in many cases fuel flexibility may be a decisive factor in a plant’s economy and feasibility of new projects. 1. Fuel Origin and Characteristics Petroleum coke (Petcoke) is a carbonaceous solid derived from oil refinery coker units or other cracking…

During fluidized bed combustion potassium and calcium from biomass ash can react with quartz (SiO2) from the bed sand already at the normal operation temperatures of 700−900 °C, forming a layer of Ca,K-silicate onto the bed particle. The layer becomes thicker in time, and the particle size increases. The layer is sticky, and the bed particles can agglomerate together increasing the bed particle size further. During unsteady operation of the boiler, or on an occasional excursion to high temperature, the whole bed can sinter. The bed agglomeration can be controlled by keeping the bed alkali contents low enough by regularly discharging the bed ash and feeding fresh sand into the bed. The chemistry of fuel ash - bed sand interactions is however complicated. It is usually useful to minimize the quartz contents in the make-up sand. The ash melting point temperatures of woody fuel ashes vary in a wide range. The wide range correlates with variations in ash composition. In general, the higher the fuel alkali and chlorine contents, the lower are the sintering and initial deformation temperatures. Wood ash starts to form agglomerates and to sinter between 900 ºC and 1000 ºC in combustion conditions. Coal and peat ashes are usually trouble free at these temperatures, even if the melting point temperatures are in the same range with biomass fuels. Coal or peat is co-fired with biomass in many multi-fuel fired boilers. The woody biomass ashes are in general much more reactive than the ashes of fossil fuels. Lower reactivity of coal and peat ashes is connected to a composition with mainly quartz and various silicate-based minerals, like aluminium silicates, calcium silicates and alkali silicates, and iron oxides. Calcium and al kali in these minerals are not in free, reactive form like they are in biomass ashes. Accordingly they are quite inert at the conditions of fluidized bed combustion. Even though combustion of woody biomass fuels is more challenging compared to coal…
