Woolwich Attack
RS News Story: Woolwich Attack

On May 22 2013, a British Army soldier named Drummer (Private) Lee Rigby of the Royal Regiment of Fusiliers was killed by two men in Woolwich, southeast London. Rigby was off duty whilst walking down Wellington Street at the time of the attack. At first he was run down with a car, then the attackers used knives and a cleaver to stab him which resulted in his death. They then dragged him onto the road and waited for police to arrive. Five minutes after the attack, armed police arrived at the scene and the attackers, who were armed with a gun and a cleaver, charged at the police. They fired two shots which wounded them both. After this series of events they were swiftly apprehended and taken to separate hospitals.

One of the main motives of the attackers was that it was an act of revenge as this man had served in Afghanistan. This likely led to the belief that, because he was in the army, they thought he killed fellow Muslims thus making his death an act of revenge. The men justified their killings by using the name of Islam and stated that it was permitted. However, an interpretation of the Quran shows that that murder of any person (Muslim or non-Muslim) is haram (forbidden) and should not be done. The Quran states,“…whosoever killeth a human being [note: not limited to Muslims only]… it shall be as if he had killed all mankind, and whoso saveth the life of one, it shall be as if he had saved the life of all mankind…” This quote from the Quran clearly shows that killing is wrong - Muslim or not. Whereas if you save a life, you will be granted Ajar (spiritual reward) which will benefit you in later life. Fighting/killing is permitted in certain circumstances such as self-defence of yourself or a fellow Muslim. As one Surah states:

"Fight in the cause of God those who fight you, but do not transgress limits; for God loves not transgressors" (2:190-193).

This Surah teaches that if a Muslim is attacked without reason or oppressed and prevented from practicing their faith, then they are given permission to fight back. However, as soon as the opposing side stops their aggression - the muslim combatant must also cease. Muslims are only allowed to fight those who attack them, not civilians or anyone not participating in the fighting as this may be seen as transgressing limits. However, many do argue that it is halal (permitted) because it is within the limits of the current war as there have been certain incidents in which civilians have suffered in countries such as Afghanistan and Iraq. Nonetheless, including innocents in warfare is not only immoral and illegal but also goes against the Quran's general teachings in regards to warfare.

Nowhere in the Quran does it support indiscriminate killing of innocent people(s) as a form of revenge for other peoples crimes, "God does not forbid you, with regard to those who fight you not for (your) faith nor drive you out of your homes, from dealing kindly and justly with them: for God loves those who are just." In other words, one should deal justice in a proper form and target those responsible for the aggression.

Islam sets down very clear rules as to when war should be waged and whether doing so is ethically right. In brief, war is permitted if:

In self-defence;

When other nations have attacked an Islamic state; and/or

If another state is oppressing its own Muslims.

There is also a method as to how war should be conducted:

In a disciplined way;

So as to avoid injuring non-combatants;

With the minimum necessary force;

Without anger;

With humane treatment towards Prisoners of War.

Muslims must only wage war in accord with Allah's justice (i.e. in line with the Quran's teachings): "Those who believe fight in the way of Allah, and those who disbelieve fight in the way of the Shaitan (Devil)" (4:76)

Ultimately, murder is wrong, no matter what religion you are in. This could lead to the possibility that this attack was because of politics. Islam is seemingly being used to justify aggression because of Western intervention in countries such as Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya (etc.). The Quran is clear about killing which makes it more likely that this attack was politically fuelled using a distorted version of Islam to legitimise it. One of the attackers indicates this as he states, "Remove your governments, they don’t care about you." People with different views and ideologies will argue on both sides and say that it was either a murder or an act of self-defence. This truly depends on one's interpretation of Islam and the concept of self-defence and whether it can be applied in this situation as a way of justifying the attack.

In conclusion, it was undoubtedly an act of extreme violence and once again, Islam was negatively projected. It is a religion of peace and tolerance (The word Muslim itself means to submit) of all others, as God created everyone, not just Muslims. The attackers seem to have a political agenda but then they use religion for more backing in order to persuade the Muslim audience. This analysis shows a different side to the Quran than that they quoted, which is very clear in that it does not condone these actions.

    After the Civil War, the southern soldiers were going back to devastated cities, destroyed railroads, and many cities were burned to the ground as a result of Sherman’s march from sea to sea. After the Civil War occurred, the slaves were given freedom from their owners, and slavery was banned. That attempt at reconstruction was not a complete fail, but it took a little bit of time for America to give social and economic equality to slaves. There were many attempts made by several different presidents, but not all seemed to work due to the South’s stubbornness. The failure of reconstruction later did not bring social and economic equality to former slaves in the south because of things like the Jim Crow laws and the South’s strong disproval of the outcome of the war.…

    On the night of the massacre the mob of armed people were protesting in King Street and about one hundred people start to head towards the Custom house where the king kept his money. Captain Preston the commander of the British troops during the Massacre stated," After I reached the guard, about one hundred people passed it and went towards the Custom house where the king's money is lodged." This brought imminent danger to the British because one hundred armed Patriots were in front of the place where the king keeps all of his money. The Soldiers just wanted to do their job by keeping the Patriots in order and keeping the King's money safe without hurting anybody. Another quote that supports that the Soldiers were just doing their job was in Richard Palmer's account and it states,” When I had got there I saw Capt. Preston at the head of 7 or 8 Soldiers at the Custom house drawn up, their Guns breast high and Bayonets fixed.” This also shows that the Soldiers just wanted to do their job by protecting the King’s money that was in the Custom house. They also had their bayonets fixed in front of the house which means their guns were up held high and not ready to fire. Both of the evidence from the testimonies show that the Soldiers just wanted to do their job by protecting the King’s money and not injuring anybody.…

    March 5th, 1770 marks a day in American history where an event took place known as the “Boston Massacre”. This notable moment in American history was a spark in the colonies that eventually led to the American colonies taking up arms against England. The “Boston Massacre” was the iconic nickname of a riot in Boston that led to British soldiers firing upon of colonists on March 5th 1770. The major controversy debated is whether or not the British officer on duty at the time gave the order to fire on the crowd or not. There have been many different stances on the argument but the fact of the matter is that the British officer in command did not give the order to fire into the crowd. To better understand why this British officer did not give the command to fire on the crowd one must first look into the situations in Boston leading up to March 5th 1770.…

    One thing people have a right to do is respond to an attack against them that might put them in risk of physical harm. It has been shown that the British were being attacked and put in a situation that if they did not respond to could lead to their deaths. However, who really started the fight that lead to the Boston Massacre? Once again, American bias has led many modern-day Americans to believe that it was Captain Preston and his British soldiers taunting colonists, or making despising comments. However, this can be proven false. Taken from a primary source document, we see that it was again the unruly colonists that are the cause of the conflict, “the rope-makers insultingly asked them if they would empty a vault. This unfortunately had the desired effect by provoking the soldiers, and from words they went to blows. Both parties suffered in this afftay, and finally the soldiers retired to their quarters. The officers, on the first knowledge of this transaction, took every precaution in their power to prevent any ill consequence. Notwithstanding which, single quarrels could not be prevented, the inhabitants constantly provoking and abusing the soldiery. The insolence as well as utter hatred of the inhabitants to the troops increased daily, insomuch that Monday and Tuesday, the 5th and 6th instant, were privately agreed on for a general engagement, in consequence of which several of the militia came from the country armed to join their friends, menacing to destroy any who should oppose them. This plan has since been discovered”.…

    Multiple Bombs Explode during the Boston Marathon (Apr. 15): Multiple bombs explode near the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Two bombs go off around 2:50 in the afternoon as runners finish the race. At least three people are killed. One is an eight year old boy. More than 170 people are injured. Another explosion happens during the afternoon at the JFK Library, but officials confirm that the incident is not connected. Later in the day, President Obama says from the White House briefing room, "We still do not know who did this or why, and people shouldn't jump to conclusions before we have all the facts, but make no mistake: We will get to the bottom of this. Any responsible individuals, any responsible groups will feel the full weight of justice." (Apr. 18): President Obama speaks at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston's South End. After the service, both the president and First lady Michelle Obama visit those injured in the explosions who are still recovering in the various hospitals throughout Boston. Later in the day, the FBI releases photos and video of two suspects in the hope that the public can help identify them. "Somebody out there knows these individuals as friends, neighbors, co-workers, or family members. Though it may be difficult, the nation is counting on those with information to come forward and provide it to us," says FBI special agent Richard DesLauriers upon the release of the photos and video. Just hours after the FBI releases the images, the two suspects rob a gas station in Central Square then shoot and kill a MIT police officer in his car. Afterwards, the two men carjack a SUV and tell the driver that they had set off the explosions at the marathon. Police pursue the vehicle into Watertown. During the shootout, a MBTA officer is shot and one of the suspects, identified as Tamerlan Tsarnaev, age 26, is killed. A suicide vest is found on his body. (Apr. 19): The other suspect, Dzhokhar A. Tsarnaev, age 19, remains at large for…

    The Massacre that was held in Boston Massachusetts on March 5, 1770 was a small yet horrific event. It started out as colonist teased and taunted the British soldiers. They also threw rocks and whatever else they could throw at them. The soldiers reacted to this by firing back at the colonist killing five people, three were killed on impact and two died later on, several were wounded. Immediately after, the colonist disappeared and the soldiers reported back to their barracks. Even though we cannot be exact on what happened for sure about what happened that day; some eyewitnesses claim they heard the commander tell the soldiers to load their weapons and fire. Some evidence proves Captain Preston’s innocence of not commanding the soldiers to fire, and that it was done in the heat of the moment (Martin Kelly).…

    The Boston Massacre brought about questions and arguments between Great Britain and the colonies that had been under surface for quite some time. Most people think of the Boston Massacre as some riled up colonists tormenting the invasive redcoats and then paying the price of antagonizing, but there was a much bigger meaning behind the killings. As in any war, there were two very different stories from either side trying to validate their actions. All of the Acts and restrictions placed upon the colonies had finally boiled to the point of explosion; there was much more behind the Boston Massacre than it seems on the surface. The massacre was the peak, not the start of the colonists’ rebellion.…
