2. They are out on the prairie, and are moving west, as the dad has an itch in his feet. The boy says it himself, as he says, He guesses he is just like his dad with an itch his feet having to move west all the time.
3. Dave’s dad is a man who has experienced the civil war between the north and the south. He has a lot of dreams for his family, and if he cold, he would settle down on the prairie. It is said, that he has an itch in his feet, which means he has to be on the move. Dave explains how they have always moved to the west, always moving from one place to another.
4. Dave’s mother is a woman who is not afraid to give her children a beating. The mother is ill, and she does not have a lot of strength to watch over her children, and be the protective mother, even though she tries by petting over the Maude. Therefore her illness make her children have to grow up. Maude is not able to seen in her way of speaking, where Dave is growing up faster.
