The perfect Psammosere consists of an Embryo Dune, the smallest dune at pH 8 and consisting of a little vegetation. Next is the Fore Dune slightly bigger consisting of more vegetation. Then there is the Yellow Dune and the Grey Dune, which are less sheltered and have lots of grasses on about 80% coverage. There is then a drop in height to the Dune Slack which often has water lying in a puddle as it goes below sea level. Because of the puddle of water it attracts water loving plants. Finally there is the Mature Dune consisting of trees; often birch and oak. The Mature Dune is the final dune of the Psammosere.…

After carefully examining your OPVL on the excerpt, “Gender, Work, and Wage in Colonial New England”, I could find no faults in how it was written. Your origin statement covers all necessary bases (author, primary v. secondary, date of creation) and even ventures further by including a small description of what the source covers. You then transition into extending your source description in your purpose statement. While reading, I became drawn in by what you had stated in your purpose statement, the idea that women at the time had done the opposite of what historians would have expected. Your value was extremely analytical and detailed, as you were able to point out all in which the source had to offer. Lastly, your limitation in itself would…
For many Americans, the late nineteenth century was a time of big business, marked by economic and social evolution. In the period between the 1880 and 1920, the American economy was growing at a rapid pace. Many European immigrants without industrial skills flooded into American factories and steel mills. These new comer's came in search of better economic opportunity, which paved the way for Heavy, low paying labor that became the job description of the era for many immigrants. One such story of immigrants of the time is Thomas Bell's Out of this Furnace. This not only a story of three generations of Slovaks and the challenges they faced but also about the Americanization and evolving of political consciousness of the immigrant workers of the American steel towns(415). Djuro Kracha is the first of his immediate family and of the three generations of immigrants to come to this country. Like many immigrants he hoped he was leaving behind the endless poverty and oppression which were the birthrights of a Slovak peasant(3). Starting out with little, Kracha first worked in the rail road industry and then followed a friend to Homestead. Dubik, because it was easier to get a job with a friend already working in the mill, landed him a job working in the blast furnaces. Work in the mills was hard and dangerous. The men worked from six to six, seven days a week. One week on day shifts and one week on night shifts, at the end of every shift the workers worked twenty-four hours. When the men worked the long shift they where exhausted, this made it fatally easy to be careless. Accidents were frequent and the employers did little or nothing to improve the conditions that the workers had to face. One example in the novel is when a blast furnace explodes and kills George's best friend Dubik; these kinds of accidents were typical of daily life in the mills during this period. Trapped by the constant work schedules and fear of losing…
To illustrate the progression of time, Bell writes the novel as a third person narrative that changes main character on four different occasions. All main characters are part of the same family, giving interpretations of the struggles they face over three different generations. The transition of main characters was always a result of a death. Whether that be in part one when the main character, George Kracha‘s wife dies after a long spin of illness, which can be gathered was a result of heart ache. Or when the actual main character dies like Mike Dobrejcak in a work related accident at the mill, and Mary Dobrejcak-Kracha after being hospitalized from consumption and later dyeing from the flu. Bell portrays a quite grim depiction of the fatality rate during the second industrial revolution. There is an emphasis on the struggles the working class had to go through just in order to stay alive.…
Eventually, violence had occurred, resulting in a gun battle which killed and injured numerous strikers and Pinkerton’s men. Andrew Carnegie had built one of the most booming steel companies in America. Throughout time, several mills were broken and these workers were represented so they couldn’t be laid off. Many of these workers were eastern and southern European immigrants along with their sons. Soon after, there was a campaign to cut workers’ wages and Carnegie pushed for it. Workers were furious with this campaign…
