After the bombs were dropped, large fires erupted that would become self-sufficient, lasting a long period of time. Although many military bases were obliterated many civilians living in the same area suffocated to death due to the large fires. This is the only bad thing that came out of incendiary bombing. The Manhattan Project was a research and development team whose aim was to build the first nuclear weapon. This Manhattan Project produced the first nuclear device which was an implosion-type bomb, which was tested in a New Mexico desert This project created two atomic bombs nicknamed Little Boy and Fat Man, which President Truman used Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
One of the main reasons for dropping the atomic bombs was that it would have forced Japan to an unconditional surrender. Back when World War II was happening many American people did not want to get involved with something that was not their business. However, some felt that it was their patriotic duty to help their fellow allies during World War II, but ultimately most people felt the need to enter the war after the bombing of Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941 because it evoked a sense of an “American Pride”. Stephen Ambrose, a respected American historian, stated in an interview with the National Geographic that “you had more enlistments on December 8 than any other day in American history”. After the bombing, the American people came together to support the troops fighting the war against the people who had attacked them.
There were many cultural effects of World War II . For example, women started to replace men, who went to fight in the war, in factories. Even after the war many women still part took in jobs that were mainly taken by men. This allowed for the change of gender roles and the opportunity for more women to take jobs in the workforce.
