World War II Rationing Analysis
“Rationing was one element of the restructure of US society, politics, and economics during World War II” (Bentley. Eating for Victory). Many supplies became scarce due to America’s full participation in the war. Without an organized system, many American citizens could not be guaranteed certain supplies. In December of 1941, the Office of Price Administration began to start the rationing of goods, and would continue to do so for the entire span of the war. Americans on the homefront were constantly making sacrifices in order to help the soldiers on the battlefront. Rationing during World War II greatly impacted the lives of millions of Americans. Although the people had less food to eat, their health increased. “Statistics show that the average American ate better during the war than ever before” (Zebrowski). Many support groups were created due to help the citizens with the many aspects of rationing. “Programs were created to help women teach women how to shop and make healthy meals” (“World War II Rationing”). The citizens were able to stay healthy and fit throughout the war by following the guidelines given by the government. “Rationing of food helps maintain citizen’s physical health and well-being” (Bentley. “Rationing”). Eating healthier was one of the many effects on Americans due to rationing during World War II. Rationing during World War II greatly impacted the lives of millions of Americans. The United State’s ability to successfully ration during World War II was one of the contributing factors that led to victory. No matter who you were or where you lived, everyone in America was affected by rationing. Sacrifices were made throughout the country and everybody pitched in.     Although many Americans would have rather had the allies win the world war, they did not want them to win enough to join in and help them. The United states entered the war for two reasons: 1) To ensure payment from allies' debt they had built up and 2) to ensure safety of United States shipping. Great Britain began to make more use of the naval strength. They set up a blockade near Germanys coast to prevent contraband, or weapons and military goods, from entering the country. However, Britain expanded this contraband to include food import. Participants: Convenience sample of 25 Holocaust survivors: 14 men, 11 women; ages 71 to 85 years. Phenomenon of Interest: Current attitudes toward food in relation to Holocaust experiences. Analysis: Themes and illustrative quotations from transcriptions of audiotaped interviews. Results: Food attitudes were influenced by Holocaust experiences. Five themes emerged: (1) difficulty throwing food away, even when spoiled; (2) storing excess food; (3) craving certain food(s); (4) difficulty standing in line for food; and (5) experiencing anxiety when food is not readily available. Empathy for those currently suffering from hunger was also reported. Conclusions and Implications: Food-related issues from the Holocaust remain for survivors. Now in their 70s and 80s, many use health care and related services. Nutritionists, educators, and health professionals should be aware of such issues. Food and nutrition programs should minimize uncomfortable food-related situations for Holocaust survivors and others who experienced food deprivation.
