- Was a war of firsts- first use of chemical weapons, mass bombardments, genocide, new technology
- The war ‘coloured what happened before and what will happen after’
- Many took up arms, reached the battlefield; everyone became a soldier (at heart or in actual). Most believed a war would rebuild the world and purify the riffraff.
- Wilfred Owen- a soldier who was optimistic about the war; believed it would be over soon and had no danger to begin with since he saw all of the high-tech artillery that Britain had. Was regarded as one of the leading poets of the war. Siegfried Sassoon influenced his shocking yet realistic poetry. Believed the worst part was to be living so long by dead bodies and body parts. Died from shell shock

- Instability brought by Keiser Wilhelm led to war; he wanted to be seen as the embodiment of Germany; wanted to impress his people and army
- He had a handicap arm- no nerve in his arm which was a result of some defect during birth. Withered arm always traumatized him. He felt unappreciated and incapable of doing things; his nature was a result of the difficulty he faced with his arm. Obsessed with sea and battleship in his childhood. At age 18, he joined the army; at age 29 he was emperor of Germany. He announced and arranged for a powerful army to be built which would be the most powerful- Britain would become insecure since they had the best navy
- Germany’s only ally left would be the Austrian-Hungarian empire- however they were unsteady itself. Due to this, Germany was now surrounded by enemies.
- Became advanced through the technology explosion such as electricity, automobiles, airplanes
- Imbalance of power and inequality produces sense of trouble
- Suffragettes- advocated women’s rights, in particular right to vote. It was believed women weren’t as smart/intelligent as men.
- Peaceful protest turned to violent actions to get people’s attention, i.e. Emily
