Wrestling Narrative
The Fall
"Fall" is a term in wrestling where a wrestler is pinned to the ground on his back. Being beaten by fall is one of the ultimate forms of humiliation for the loser and a demonstration of absolute domination for the winner. I won most wrestling matches during my eighth grade year. My ego began to inflate more and more, as I began defeating most of my opponents by fall. However, I was not becoming a positive role model. With my undefeated record, I found myself fooling around in practice and bragging that I was the best wrestler ever. These churlish activities weren’t corrected until the season was nearing a close.
It was a match like any other day against Lyndhurst, I was being overconfident and not actually focusing on my match.

Wrestling is tough, it is a sport much from its participants, but if one has the courage to step out on the mat dressed in a uniform that leaves a little imagination and challenge another human to a match to see who the better man is. Danger can be found in every sport, and wrestling are no more prone to injury’s to soccer, football, track stars, lacrosse. Wrestling creates a sense of accountable for one’s actions. Those that work hard, succeed. There is no one to hide behind; every flaw and mistake is brought forth in a match. It takes a great deal of mental toughness and sacrifice nights with friends for extra practice and consideration, favorite food to lose the extra pound, and sleep when one needs to wake up at 4am to go for a run before school begins. That competitive nature of clashing with another human being creates a sense of community within the wrestling world. Those that have never participated in the sport have a tough time understanding this. Opponents’ must shake hands before and after, showing respect for the other fighter, win or lose. It is uncommon to see administration in the form of an embrace even after one has lost a tough battle. These values are created through combative sports, and stay with a wrestle for the remainder of their…

Ben Hall and Maguire may have divided the property and operated independently of each other, as in John McGuire's narrative, 'The Biography of a Reliable Old Native', Maguire states that Ben Hall reputedly named his portion 'Cubbine Bin', running his own cattle and horses, and when required the two men worked together in clearing and forming stockyards close to their water supply, this would have been a prudent way to operate a new farming enterprise in the 1860’s, and thus the two squatters shared the yearly rent to the government, as for the acquiring of stock for this new enterprise, John Maguire states that Ben Hall and himself had done a bit of duffing, Maguire…

However, throughout my four years here, I have experienced my own falls and have learned to change myself for the better no matter what that fall was. Albright stated that falling could generally be seen as a failure, a defeat, a loss, or a decline. The word falling has many meanings. Occasionally, falling can be a positive thing because one simple decline can allow an individual to better themselves and learn from their mistakes. It can simply teach someone how far they can…

By starting the chapter off with a study between two economists who tried to find a solution for parents who repeatedly came late to pick up their children from daycare, Steven Levitt discusses the concept of incentives and its benefits and weaknesses. An incentive is something that tends to incite an action for the greater effort, as a reward offered for increased productivity. Basically, an incentive is used to motivate someone to do more “good things and less of the bad things.” Essentially, at root, the study of incentives is economics: “how people get what they want or need, especially when other people need or want the same thing.” Incentives are issued usually for…

The day has finally come; it’s the last day of cheer. After days of constant cheering, dancing and stunting, it was the day either for my dreams to be crushed or for them the come true. I couldn’t decide what to wear, what to expect, whether to wear a bow or not. My life is a hot mess at the moment. I am freaking out. I’m giving my self a pep talk trying to get my life together. Then all of a sudden I thought, “What am I talking about I am not confident in myself.” That is big problem because the whole point of being a cheerleader you need to confident and positive. “What did I get myself into?” “Why did I even tryout?” “None of the girls are going to accept me on the team.” Then I looked at the time. I had thirty minutes till I had to be there. I had nothing to wear, and I haven’t done my hair.…

Later, we went down to the wrestling room and we played King of the Mat. This is a game in which one must consistently win in order to stay in the center and keep wrestling, until no one else is left to beat. This was my favorite game to play during practice because I would always win. I made it all the way through the lineup. Only one kid left, Nate, the smallest kid on the team. I was smiling because I was ready to win. My legs froze up. Mobility was beyond me, once again. He immediately took me down quicker than I’ve been taken down.…

“I’ve been drinking since I was twelve, but I don’t think I was exactly twelve. Maybe older, maybe younger. I’m a little tipsy now but that’s not what you want to hear. I was once told I drank like an eel, I’m not sure what that meant, but again that’s not what you want to hear. You want me to sit here and tell you the exact traumatic moment when I began drinking; It was the first time I ever had that nightmare. The next day I asked my dad why drank, he said ‘I drink to forget’. He never told me what he was trying to forget. I thought ‘I drinking makes you forget, maybe I’ll forget the dream.’ So I drank a couple of beers then went to sleep. The dream was worse than before, but that was the cycle every night for the past thirty-five years.”…

I remember those long, horrible terrible days spent at wrestling camp. The combined smell of over 50 boys working out IS hard to forget, after all. I was a mediocre wrestler at best (still am in fact), but even I knew these guys were on a tier far higher than I could ever hope to reach. While I was there, I got all beat up, exhausted, and even cried. I knew I wouldn’t be able to keep up with these guys. But I’d’ve rather died than not try.…
