You can expect by the language and the resources that they had, that the story was set in olden times. Since modern electricity was installed in homes during the end of the 19th century you can expect that the story was placed in the 19th century or the early 20th. In the beginning she seems to care for John and would like to spend more time with him. Ann is the beginning of the story goes on about she doesn't want him to leave and a big storm was coming. It seemed to imply that she cared. The character talks with some resentment toward John leaving and has mixed feeling about John Himself. She often compares John to Steven particular in their looks. It becomes very clear from the moment that Steven arrives that there is an internal conflict with Ann. Ann often mentions being married to John for seven years. In farming after seven years you don't farm that part of land and let it have a year to relax and take a break. This can be a hint that after seven years of the marriage to John she wants something to change.
Steven is a character where your prospective of him changes depending on the way Ann reacts. Ann goes between seeing Steven as protective and good or intimidating. Throughout the story he keeps reassuring her that everything is fine and then tells her that John is not coming home that night.
