made of more than most and that the current trial was her being victimised as a criminal in a coup. Nevertheless, the proceedings took place, her critics claiming that the trial has to take place as the supreme court need to assess whether ‘she committed a “crime of responsibility” by putty filling the government accounts’ to cloak the misfortune she had with the economy in actuality before her last election. The Brazilian people are now tired of the squabbles in Brasília; they are taking precedence over the actual country and the state of its economy. The people of Brazil are starting to see the break up of democracy despite the separation of powers taking out a ‘corrupt president’. Taking a step back, the key message to take from the trial is that Brazils government have nearly succeeded in ousting a ‘democratically elected’ party and its elected president opting for an unelected, power hungry president. It should be noted that Dilma’s party ‘the workers party’ have not lost an election since 2002.
Living under the shade of a threat for impeachment for around 1 year, Rousseff began her speech in the trial. In her 40-minute statement, Rousseff peacefully protested for her innocence. Rousseff struck a tone that oscillated between that of her being a a defiant warrior defending social rights, a Marxist guerrilla and a victimised woman, a strong woman being made to play the bad guy, shamed by usurpers to her elected and rightful place as president. She reminded the senators that during her second terms inauguration in January 2015, she had made a promise to respect the constitution, observe the laws and carry out a mandate given to her by the 54 million voters. But she also acknowledged to the senate that she had flaws. That her government had been damaged by economic crises and the political wobble - and that it was worsened by her opponents. This does reveal an unofficial, choked up confession to her fudging of the government budget to gain voters in the last election (which is what she is being trialled for). This makes me question my view of the scenario; Thinking that there can only be a good and a bad was naive of me, Rousseff was guilty but so are most of the others, definitely Temer and other key players in the
impeachment.
