After World War Two, Germany was divided into two separate countries. West Germany became a democratic country, under the influence of its allies France, Britain and the United States. The Berlin Wall still could not hold down the people’s ideas, this is evidenced by the ways in which people tried to escape. More creative ways were strategized in hope to finding a successful method. Ideas of tunnels were introduced as a new approach to getting over to the other side of the Berlin Wall. There were approximately 70 known tunnel projects, which only 20% were successful for making an escape. A popular tunnel’s entrance was in a cemetery where the Germans could go to “mourn” but had just happened to “disappear” afterwards. This tunnel is known to have allowed 50 successful escapes until the tunnel was eventually found. When a woman had left her baby’s carriage near the entrance of the tunnel, the tunnel was discovered and filled in. Tunnels were a way in which the people didn’t have to risk coming across guards, as they weren’t crossing at the Berlin Wall. All together, it is known that over 5,000 East Germans were successful in escaping over to the West side during this time.
