The Shoe Store Incident
Discrimination due to age is one of the great tragedies of modern life. The desire to work and be useful is what makes life worth living, and to be told your efforts are not needed because you are the wrong age is a crime (Llopis, 2011). there are times when manager have to make important decisions that directly affect the customers and employees whom they have interaction with on a daily basis. Under federal and state legislation, unlawful discrimination occurs when someone, or a group of people, is treated less favourably than another person or group because of their race, colour, national or ethnic origin; sex, pregnancy or marital status; age; disability; religion; sexual preference; trade union activity; or some other characteristic specified under anti-discrimination or human rights legislation (Llopis, 2011). In the situation about the customer and the manager dilemma illustrations show that the customer is comfortable or acting in a discriminatory manner because the customer only wants female services from the company.
Imelda is the stores best customer and she has created a situation where the manager has to make a decision because the customer’s request of being attended by female employees is interfering with the companies’ fair policies and ethical standards. The employees share the commission and they alternate position in the store to create a fair equality standard and values in the company. Problems may arise if the customer is constantly entering the store and buying merchandise and is giving a good time to the female employee that attended her. There are many issues that may evolve because the customers special requests. The first problem that can arise is that employees will feel that discriminated by the customer and the manager for letting the customer get away with discriminating acts.
