Writers Block Reflection
Writers block is a serious issue for many students, especially when the task is to write about an unfamiliar topic and/or contains a deadline. I am currently taking this course as well as the Business Capstone and both courses are requiring in-depth writing within topics I am not familiar (and of course with most students trying to finish their degree twenty years later, my time is limited due to family and work obligations) therefore, research and writers block has been a concern. I have enjoyed these discussion board postings as an outlet for writers block, the subjects have all been self-reflective and reasonably easy to tackle. When I feel as though I am not progressing in my writing, I will take a moment to work on these discussion posts,

Writer’s block is a term often use to describe a creative block when they are unsure and lost on how to go about with their writing; it’s not just the inability to continue with their work, but it can also be the inability to produce something creative. Moreover, this term is not isolated to writers only, this creative block can apply to all those who practice the art — artists, composers, choreographers. In this essay, I shall explain a few relatively common causes of writer’s block and the techniques to overcome this creativity block. I will be referring to several sources and to my experience on how I deal with writer’s block.…

I have decided to do a topic near and dear to my heart, writer's block. Actually that was such a lie. I struggle with this almost every time I have to write something, whether it’s a writing prompt or even just a simple response. Say you have to write a five paragraph essay that is due the next day, but you hit a rock and you’re stuck on what to write next. What do you do? How can you get out of this misery? Well, it looks like you have come down with a case of writer’s block. Knowing me, I have had writer’s block too many times but with a couple of tools and strategies, I have learned how to get through it from my tutor who has saved me the many times that this misery has happened. To be honest, which is the best policy in most cases, if I did this rant project a couple of years ago, when I hated writing, I probably wouldn’t have known ANY ways to cope with writer’s block. I still hate it, but at least now I know how to get through it.…

Mike Rose brings all the chapters of this book together by not just researching how writers write, produce, plan, revise, etc.; but instead he is asking what physically and mentally keeps a writer for be unable to write the next sentence. He said that the “writer’s block” could be due to “anxiety, fear of evaluation, insecurity, etc.; he decided to dig deeper and come up with the best reasoning. He came to find out that the five students he studied who experienced writer’s block were all using rules and/or planning strategies that had been embedded into their heads that may not be compatible with their composing process, therefore hindering their writing rather than improving it. This relates to my question because there really are aspects to writing that we have been told are helpful but may actually keep us from excelling. Rose states that sometimes less is more. Students…

Freewriting is a good first step to take when approaching a writing assignment because it brings out ideas and creativity in a short period of time. I will definitely use freewriting as part of my writing process. Not only will it help me with “writers block”, but it will allow me to be more creative and inspired with my thoughts. No need to waste time editing, formatting, and organizing-just jot down thoughts and ideas. There is no wrong or right way to do it. It is another form of brainstorming, but on…

There are many essays throughout the text of Writing About Writing, which discuss writing in a particular way. In chapter two, Maria P. Rey writes a letter to her high school criticizing their teaching strategies. The rules her previous professors had restricted her with often times caused writers block. Mike Rose, a student at the University of California, found that “ students who experienced blocking were all operating either with writing rules or… strategies that impeded rather than enhanced the composing process” (272). Rose’s research supports the dilemma of Maria’s writers block. Students do not intentionally produce poor papers. Rather it is the stress they experience along with…

After going to the Ashford Writing Center, I have decided that the writing skill that I would like to improve, first, is to have a better grasp of proper APA formatting. My goal as a challenged writer is to always improve and show my best work. Though it usually takes quite some time for me to produce my absolute best; I often come across problems that constantly bring me to a halt. One of the difficult things to accomplish in writing is usually overcoming writer’s block. From the moment when I first started writing as a child, my main problem always seemed to be writer’s block. However, over the years I’ve learned to somewhat overcome my problem by just putting down the exact thoughts in my head, on paper. Though, it not always easy or works according to plan, it still allows me to perform to the best of my skills. Overall when writing a paper, my first priority is to get the thoughts from my head into the paper. Even though, it may be difficult whether from grammar choices or writer’s block, in the end writing and finishing my assignment and getting a better grade is something I look to improve with this…

The quote “ If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” by Frederick Douglass clearly sums up my experience as a writer. Writing has always been a challenge for me primarily due to a lack of practice and confidence. Whenever I am assigned a writing task, academic or creative, such a journal entry, reflection paper, essay, or research paper, my immediate reaction is instinctively negative and fearful. In addition, I never took the subject seriously in my years of studies because I never deemed writing to be crucial and necessary unless I wanted to become a professional writer.…

Coming into preparing for my paragraph I had three goals; make a strong a valid point, answering all of the possible questions a reader may have, and having a structured well developed paragraph. I wanted to maitain these goals throughout the writing process. I had to do minimal research becasuse I was familiar with the topic. There are three reasons why I chose to write about the qualities it takes to be a firefighter. First, I was able to choose the topic that I was most comfortable with. Second, I knew a lot about the efforts it takes to becoming a firefighter. I had a lot of outside information that most people would not get by simply using google. Finally, I felt for the first time, that I organized my writing in such a way that the message was clear and my opinion was supported with facts and life experiences. By doing this parargraph, I learned that it was important to have an organized outline, facts that support my position and details that enhance the message. It was a very long process for online one single paragraph but it allowed me to get several peer edits and other peoples opinions to make it an exceptional reading. Allowing my peers to look at my rough draft and make corrections or suggestions was a great and simple way for me to enhance my brain into creating structure. It also allowed me to interact with my classmates and brain storm. Overall it was well drawn out process and beneficial experience. I was able to maintain my goals throughout the process and learn some new techniques and develop them into my writing.…

In school, we have been required to write many papers on many different subjects, some being timed and others not. Writing has never been something that has come easy to me, especially when put on the spot and told to write a paper in a certain amount of hours. When I write, I like to have time to think and plan my essay. Being able to revise and edit the paper makes it even better than it was before. When I am given the time to plan my essay, the writing has more depth than when I am put on the spot and have no time to think about what will go into my paper.…

But after reading “They Say/ I Say”, and going through a few classes discussing the text. I now have a deeper understanding of a writer’s audience, and how the importance of narrowing down who you are talking too in your essays is when trying to convince someone of something. Also, something I didn’t realize was that there are various ways and templates on introducing ideas, refuting ideas, summarizing ideas, etc. to help make your argument stronger. These templates in the They Say/I Say reading really gave me a bulk of new ways to introduce my ideas for my essay assignments in class, and really made me a better writer. This led to me seriously changing my writing process. Previously, I would simply sit on an essay assignment for a while and like most people, when the deadline or due date finally sneaks up on me I’d do it. This cycle of procrastinating really hurt my ability to string together strong coherent essays, even in my first two essays for the class. But because of my Professors emphasis on peer review and really the writing process in general, I can proudly say have changed my ways. I’ve now developed a pretty solid routine that includes first prewriting/invention, then drafting, then I revise/editing, then finally I reflect my writing. This has helped me completely avoid writer’s block, an issue I faced before taking this…

Mike Rose presents an issue about student`s block during writing. He starts expressing an example extracted from interviews of undergradutes from UCLA who five of them present this block problem and the other five do not. They have this issue because most of them are in rushed, late papers or they do not trust on their own skills because of previous experiences. It is also explained that emotion brings this problem and these emotion are what divide the five students with this block problem and the other five who does not present it. Also, the students who were not in problem could have used some rules or strategies to avoid the problem. The first strategie is called rules. It is defined as ‘’an inferred capability that enables the individual…

When walking into my first period class as high schooler, I pictured myself as a well-rounded writer. My impression suddenly changed after a few weeks in Ms. Giroux’s class. As I received my first ECQ grade with a blood-inked C written in the corner, I realized I was going to have to put a lot more effort into my writing. I began to spend more time and put tedious details in my writing while doing deep revisions after my paper was complete. Towards the beginning of the year, my writing lacked creativity and organization skills.…
