Handout on Comparative Reading for English 2

Description:
The requirement is inspired by Lisa Bu’s experience with reading. She found happiness in the world of books after losing her dream of becoming a Chinese opera singer. Her experience synthesizes the reading texts covered in the first part of the preliminary grading period on: What is Reading, Stages of Reading, Importance of Reading, Processes of Reading, and The Types of Reading. Having her experience and insights as a model, you are expected to come up with the same reflection process on your experience with reading and how it influenced your skills or perspective about the world.

Objectives:
Upon completion of the requirement, you have
1. read two texts in a month and a week
2. compared the similar themes and elements found in the texts
3. contrasted the different themes and elements found in the texts
4. discussed ideas with a partner or two other members
5. accomplished a collaboratively written output

Task:
1. Choose a partner or a team of two others to work with.
2. Choose two texts you are to compare and contrast. Be guided by the themes and topics below.
3. Discuss your insights at the beginning, duration and end of the reading process.
4. Write the comparison and contrast essay on the two texts.
5. Be guided by the process and grading components listed below.
6. Submit all written outputs as a class in alphabetical order on January 6, 2013, Monday during our scheduled class hour.

Suggested Topics:
A comparison of:
-Noli Me Tangere the textbook and the novel
-Pugad Baboy and Mangga
-Jane Austen and Nicholas Sparks
-Confucian Analects and Summa Theologia
-James Joyce’s novel A Portrait of the Artist and Nick Joaquin’s play A Portrait of the Artist as Filipino

Guidelines on Comparative Reading
1. Read one text at a time following the three reading stages of pre-reading, actual reading and post reading.

    In the article, “The Princess Paradox”, James Poniewozik describes how the princess era is making a comeback. He uses a lot of examples of cinderella stories and other fairytale projects to describe how the princess era is becoming a trend today.
