THE PROCESS OF SCIENCE
QUANTUM COMPUTING My field of study at ITT Technical Institute in Atlanta, GA is the CNS Program. In doing research for my writing assignment I started with an abstract from a Nature Communications article. The abstract, Designing a Practical high-fidelity long-term quantum memory, was brought to my attention from another article. I have used this article as my abstract because payment was required for the full article. It essentially states that the ability to create computer hardware with “Quantum memory is a central component for quantum information processing devices and will be required to provide high-fidelity storage of arbitrary states, long storage times and small access latencies.” (College, 2013) Quantum memory, using physics, would advance the world of technology in to the “star wars” era and may “revolutionize information processing.” (College, 2013) (Communications, 2013) The abstract article that I read was hard to understand. The most that I understood was the fact that they were working on quantum memory and there were problems associated with it. The full article that I read was much easier to understand. It stated that with quantum computing the ability “to solve problems too complex for traditional computers, with applications in code breaking materials science and physics.” (College, 2013) would be a daunting task to engineer. The problem with quantum memory has been that it cannot store information (previously just tiny fractions of a second) for very a long time and the error rates associated with the storage. “The Sydney-Dartmouth team’s results demonstrate a path to what is considered a holy grail in the research community: storing quantum states with high fidelity for exceptionally long times, even hours according to their calculations.” (College, 2013)
