Writing Developmental Continuum This assessment is meant to help teachers identify the phase of writing development. By observing the child a teacher can see just which phase they are in based on indicators stated in the guide. It is not uncommon for children to display characteristics of more than one phase. There are five phases which are “Role Play , Experimental, Early, Conventional and Proficient. Role Play is the beginning, where children essentially make marks on paper, trying their best to represent letters. Experimental writing phase is when children are aware that writing is a way of communication and know that writing from left to right is the proper way. Early writing is when children have developed a basic sense of sentence but have limited understanding, such as forgetting punctuation marks and capitalization. They can compare what student understands from the different phases and what to teach so that the student can improve and understand writing as they transition to the next phase of the continuum. Brandon would be considered to be a student in the early writing phase as he understands punctuation and knows that writing is a way to communication and to remember things for later. However, he understands sentence structure but shows he doesn’t use varied structure to begin sentences, at least it the same prompts. My suggestion is that Brandon work with sentence frames to see just how different sentences can vary. This will also lead to him seeing that sentences are all part of a paragraph. The paragraph is the main idea of what an essay will be when he one day gets to that stage. Writers workshop will help him but it will and must teach him to proofread and edit his own writing. It is with this that Brandon can see his mistakes in writing and begin to correct those mistakes to most onto the next writing

    In the article “Unteaching the Five-Paragraph Essay”, Marie Foley argues that the five-paragraph formula restrains students from actively thinking. The five-paragraph structure is still used today because teachers are continuing to teach students the formula. The formula is said to be easier to teach to a class rather than to teach individual students different patterns of organization. Foley says that the formula being taught is easier on them to teach and to grade because of how crowded the English classes are. The formula contradicts most instructor’s basic goals because it is “depriving [students] of the pleasure of discovering new ideas”. Foley points out three reasons to end the formula. One being that it deters discovery. She states that students become too dependent on this structure once they have mastered it which makes it difficult to change writing styles. The structure “invites students to fill the five slots with what they already know” which prevents them from coming up with new ideas and exploring their minds. Foley also points out that the formula suppresses authenticity of the writer. Although the student goes through the motions of writing, “they seldom create something authentically theirs.” Students freely express themselves in writings such as personal letters and journals, but creates another title for themselves when writing an essay. Foley states that the five paragraph formula fails to portray the writer’s personality and is also unnatural in many ways. The structure is not used by professional writers because it weakens coherence, which is one of the most basic writing needs. It “limits students to a superficial, predictable level of coherence.” Foley argues that the formula hurts students rather than help them. It deprives them of the pleasure of writing and will not prepare them for academic and real world writing.…

The writing process is a situation that is approached from various angles. In the writing process techniques and sequences from person to person are often diverse, but it is one of the ways one may be expressed.
