ESSAYS OF COMPARISON AND CONTRAST

Essays of comparison and contrast discuss differences and similarities between two ideas, subjects, or issues.
 Model essay 1:
Gender Differences
The battle between the sexes started with Adam and Eve, and will probably continue forever. The opinion that men are superior to women has long been accepted in many cultures, but the feminist movement is trying to change this view.
Feminists say that boys and girls are exactly equal at birth, yet they become different because of the way they are treated by society. However, recent research says that males and females aren’t alike at birth.
The first difference is caused by societal influences inside and outside the family. Inside the family the boys learn to imitate their fathers, and girls learn to imitate their mothers. Outside the family, boys stop playing with girl toys; otherwise, they receive disapproval. Also girls that play with boys’ toys receive disapproval. The second difference is caused by differences in the physiology of the brain. For example, more men are left-handed than woman; that means that the right side of men’s brains, which control the left side of the body, is dominant. The right side of the brain is responsible for reasoning abilities; whereas, the left side of the brain is responsible for verbal skills.
The third difference is caused by the ability to learn language. Girls not only speak earlier than men but also speak more clearly and develop larger vocabulary. Boys’ difficulty with language is due to the dominance of their right brain. Although men and women are different in many physiological ways, they are also similar in other ways. For example, boys and girls are equal in their math

One brain two sides; the left brain analysis breaking information into parts about 95% of people use the left brain to speak, write, and understand. This includes time sense and rhythm. The right side of the brain processes information by using nonverbal responses such as, pointing at objects, simple language comprehension and recognition of pattern. Lobes of the cerebral cortex are larger fissures on the surface of the cortex. The cerebral cortex is responsible for reasoning planning, mental abiliites, sense of self and motor control. This area contains mirror neurons, which becomes active when you observe someone else and then you carried out the same action.…

During the time of the newly born America, many disputed over the way the country should be ran. There were those who favored a federalist government and those who opposed it. George Clinton held a very strong position to why he was antifederalist ultimately believing that a weak central government would allow the voice of the people to be heard better while James Madison favored the federalist government because of the capability of equal representation. Although at first glance the positions these two have seem similar, there are very distinctive rationales to why they had to separate opinions.…

This study was conducted to find a relationship between handedness and hemispheric dominance. The participants in this investigation were all year 11 students in psychology 1A/B at Greenwood College. The data collected by the survey sheet was put into a table then graphed into two separate graphs; one graph for left and the other for right hemisphere dominance. The results that were found rejected the hypothesis of there is a relationship between handedness and hemispheric dominance. It seems that majority of people are just right handed and left hemisphere dominant. The study is very limited due to the ample size and all the uncontrolled variables left in the investigation. This study can be criticized as very unreliable because of its lack to control variables.…

If a family member who read the book ‘Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain’ (Edwards, 1980) and was convinced this phenomenon was true I’d simply explain to them that both sides of the brain are conscious while performing any tasks. For example when giving a speech in front of a large audience, your left hemisphere would concentrate on your word choice. While your right hemisphere would concentrate on the intonation and volume for your voice. It is impossible to perform a single task only using one hemisphere of the brain at a time, unless you are split…

As Larry Cahill 's article “His Brain, Her Brain”, points out there has been data showing a vast “...array of structural, chemical and functional variations” between the sexes; but does size matter? Lawrence Summers, former President of Harvard, thought so. Men 's brains are 13% larger than women 's brains, but does that really make them more advanced in math, physics and science? There are other anatomical variations and some of these are found to influence the way male and female brains work. Scientists have spent decades studying the brain and trying to answer questions regarding brain function. Trying to answer what actions are nature or nurture. Why do men and women act so…

The left brain is called the logical, or rational, side of the brain. Left brainers do things in the "proper" order and feel that there is a proper order. They to do well in subjects like reading, writing, speech and math. These subjects have an ordered sequence and left brainers process better in a linear, step by step style. Left brain dominant people will likely succeed in professions such as law, science and accounting (Williams.) Other characteristics of the left brain and left brained learners are that they usually spell very well since spelling involves the sequencing of letters; they can be very good at math because they can memorize formulas and they perform well at solving problems in a linear fashion; and usually they can give directions well because they have the visual acuity to see what they want to say and have it verbalize fluidly. More often than not, schools and institutions favor the left brain thinkers over the right brain thinkers. The subjects at school focus on logical thinking and analysis and accuracy. This does not mean that the right brain thinkers are not as smart though.…

The left brain versus right brain learning theory states that each side of the brain controls different types of thinking. These different types of thinking are said to be dominant in different types of people. It is postulated that people are either left or right brain thinkers, and it is complicated for a person to try to think any differently than they already know how. The idea was raised in the 1860’s when Pierre Paul Broca, a French physician, came upon brain function lateralization. A patient of his had a speech deficit and could not process words correctly. When the patient passed and Broca did an autopsy he found that he had a lesion in the left hemisphere. Broca was the first person to discover that the left side of the brain controlled language (Murr and Williams, 1988). In the 1960’s Michael Gazzaniga and Roger Sperry were studying the effects of epilepsy. They discovered that by cutting the corpus collosum (the part that connects the two hemispheres) they could treat the seizures by reducing or eliminating them (Cherry, 2012). However, the patients began to show side effects of the procedure. Many were unable to name objects processed by the right brain but were able to name ones that were processed by the left. After studying the patients Sperry initiated the study of the two hemispheres and how they process and store information in different ways.…

Gender roles are not always prominent in a child’s life. Sometimes their parents influence how a child will grow up and act due to the way that they teach them to be at such a young age. However, when it comes to Katha Pollitt’s article, I do agree with her when she states that feminism does have a “natural limit”. When the subject of a natural limit to feminism is brought up, the idea of where the influence of this comes from comes to my mind.…

Studies have been conducted on cerebral lateralization and functionality of the human brain. Many studies have revealed there are no substantial differences of the left and right hemispheres of the human brain (Pinel, 2009). Some functional differences have shown one hemisphere may be slightly dominating for functional differences (Pinel, 2009).…
