INTRODUCTION: “Is there beyond the silent night an endless day? Is death a door that leads to light? We cannot say” -R.G.INGERSOLL Kalpana Chawla , the child of imagination has gone to the space eternally to explore if death is a door that leads to light. With a heavy heart our nation salutes this light hearted soul who thought that the universe was her home. This daughter of universe has disappeared in the space on a space mission to bring the benefits of science to humanity at large

DREAM OF MILKYWAY: Kalpana Chawla’s strong desire was to travel beyond the blue sky. She desired to fly into the heavens and touch the stars someday. In India, during summer Kalpana often slept in the courtyard under the stars. At that time she gazed dreamily at the Milkyway. “Stars in the summer night Far in you azure deeps. Hide, hide your golden light ! She sleeps! My lady sleeps” -LONG FELLOW

But Kalpana did not sleep. She was thinking about the stars and dreaming about reaching them one day. Her awe for the heavens began thus. During her college days she saw the movie, ”Those magnificent in their flying machines.”Her path to the Milky way was laid then. With single mind she determined to be an astronaut. She had inherited her gift from her father who had established a thriving tyre business from dust and destruction.

In the early spring of 1986, The Challenger was scheduled to launch in the morning from the Kennedy Space Center. The Challenger had seven passengers. One of these passengers was a Christa McAuliffe, a social studies teacher from New Hampshire. She was the first ordinary citizen to be going to space. The social studies teacher had won the opportunity through NASA’s Teachers in space program. The spacecraft was in the air only seventy-three seconds before it exploded and broke apart into the ocean. Everyone was in shock. All the passengers were killed tragically. This put a horrible mark on NASA’s reputation. Some even wanted to close the exploration to space. American was in mourning and everyone felt the blow of the tragedy. However, President Ronald Reagan saw it fit to continue space exploration. He gave an argument and a tribute to America and the families of the lost passengers. His tribute swayed American to see the silver lining in the tragedy and understand why we must continue the journey to explore space.…

The introduction to processed foods took the world by storm, with quicker food preparation, less time spent cleaning, drive-thru access and the introduction to new recipes. Long before processed foods such as the Twinkie, Honey bun, Spam, frozen dinners, milk, etc; people consumed more wholesome foods naturally loaded with nutrients the human body needed to sustain itself. Processed foods did not exist until the early 19th Century and have since become highly advertised and subsidized by the government. Whole foods on the other hand receive little advertisement and no government subsidies, leading people away from choosing a healthier lifestyle. I believe that processed foods may perhaps taste, look and smell better than their natural whole food counterpart does, yet can you really afford to risk your health for the sake of being happy you had the ability to choose your meal?…

New technological advances allow for patients to stay alive in situations that they normally could not survive. This causes an increasingly problematic conflict between medical and legal systems. The Uniform Declaration of Death Act allows for a somewhat reliable definition for death in both systems. However, some situations still challenge the universally accepted definition of death. Lia’s situation is a perfect example of how a medical definition of death conflicts with legal conditions. Lia’s complex medical situation showcases how death challenges both the medical and legal systems in America, making it very difficult to offer a concrete definition.…

I disagree with the argument used in Peter Katopes' article, which gives his opinion on how a "Business Model" used in colleges is a wrong model, because this would decrease the enrollment rates and make colleges less satisfying to it's customers. Katopes strongly stresses that "the business model, which prizes 'customer satisfaction' or 'efficiency' above all else, has led in higher education to an imbalance in the relation between student and institution." His opinion is highly valid, but could very well lead to a downfall in student enrollment rates in general. Many universities are chosen by students for opportunities to take part in unique extracurricular activities provided, and even for a great time and bragging rights from the schools reputation. Also, with a strictly educational based model, which includes "teaching them to live and serve within a context of responsibility, prudence, and care" that Katopes believes should be the only primary focus for colleges, may dampen the students interests in the entire college experience itself.…

Domestic violence is a habitual pattern of violent behavior in a relationship used by one partner in order to gain control and power over another intimate partner. This is the definition given by the US Office on Violence Against Women. Domestic violence can inflict anyone anywhere in the world regardless of age, race, religion and gender. Based on statistics, the leading cause of injury to women is domestic violence. The number of reported violence exceeds that of muggings, vehicle accidents and rapes combined. To illustrate the severity of this problem, a woman is assaulted every nine seconds in the US and more than 3 women are murdered either by their husbands or boyfriends daily. Why is domestic violence so rampant in the society? What are the factors that contribute to such violence?…

The reason why I chose to write about Robert R. Gilruth was because I look up to him for laying out the groundworks for something I have a great affinity to which is space. Without his involvement, the United State’s Space Program might not be as it is today. Gilruth’s work gave the US’ space program recognition and prestige. None of that would have been possible without his set dedication of doing so and that kind of work ethic and passion is something that cannot be looked down…

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise. Its continuing mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before”, a quote from star trek, the TV series famous for its technological predictions that illustrates a possible future for mankind. From the beginning of man, billions of individuals have been staring up at the night sky, wondering what its purpose was and how it worked. The universe has been a mysterious place for thousands of years until more recently where the stars and planets were not being referred to as ‘gods’, but as large land masses and giant balls of gas all made up of millions of little…

Space exploration is the ongoing discovery and exploration of celestial structures in outer space by means of continuously evolving and growing space technology. The whole subject of space exploration is so vast, from the V2 Missile to the most recent launches of today. So, to narrow it down, this essay will cover some space exploration involving women. 536 people have gone to space. 58 of those were women. Eight of those flew in the Soviet/Russian Space program, two in the Chinese program, and the other 49 flew with NASA. (Women in Space, 2015) parenthetical citation…

Space tourism encapsulates the notion that paying passengers will have the opportunity to travel beyond Earth's atmosphere and experience orbital flights, prolonged stays in rotating space hotels and participate in research, entertainment and even sport. But as demand grows, the cost of space travel might come down and even the middle class may soon be able to sign up for tours to outer space. Many companies are trying to make sub-orbital flights affordable to the public. In India, people like Jay Patel, a diamond trader, and Santhosh George Kulangara have signed up as space tourists.…
